Hi, guys. Well, I have been thinking about getting laser hair removal done on my legs and underarms and upperlip for quite some time now but I was wondering if there was a certain age requirement that a person needs to meet?? I am 16 years old. Also, how much money does this generally cost w/o insurance? If anyone knows then an answer would be greatly appreciated.:)

I'm not 100% sure but I think you have to be 18 to great treatment done. Cost varies. Some places offer lower rates than others. Make sure you find a good technician. A good technician will tell you all of the risks involved. She will also tell you that if the heat doesn't go away within a few seconds then you need to tell her so she can lower the heat. A lot of women get burned because they don't speak up if it burns.

ok i have lasered EVERYTHING.
1. i started at 16-17.
2. do not go near your face with the laser. for men, it is ok, for women in over 50% of cases, hair growth is stimulated if done on the face. there is NO WAY to determine if you will be a lucky one or not. if you go to a responsible technician as opposed to one who wants your $, they will not do your face.
3. legs cost 600-700 (for both) at every reputible place i've been. i've heard some places say $300, but if there is such a big gap i don't how good the cheaper one is.
4. the best treatment will be done every 6 weeks. you are not supposed to go in the sun 1 month prior and up to 1 month after your treatment. you will need anywhere from 4-8 treatments.
5. laser is not 100% effective, in that MOST (like 85%) people will experience between 10-30% regrowth. regrowth will have to be electrolysised to be permanently gone.
6. if it is not painful, the treatment won't be effective. however, the pp was right in sayig you can get burned if its too hot. a technician should do a skin patch test before your first appt to determine which setting is right for you. they will test an area and see how your skin reacts.
. there are numbing creams to use, but recently there have been some deaths linked to the creams (although the creams were improperly used). i use the cream (i am currently having my re-growth electrolysised) only for my bikini area (with laser and elect.) the cream is expensive and annoying to use and may cause death it appears, so the best to do would be to grin and bear it. some areas (like the ankles) are more painful than fatty areas of the leg, but the pain is NOTHING compared to your 'cookie' ;) (i have the whoe thing lasered).
7.underarms cost approx 200 (for both)
8. insurance usually does not pay for any of this as it is cosmetic

Jozi, how did the laser treatment work out for you then? do you recommend it? i have olive skin and black hair. it's coarse on my legs and underarms. i heard that type of hair has been most effective in laser treatment. i'm still not sure how i would be able to do this though b/c neither of my parents support this... but thats b/c i havent showed then my legs yet.... i havent shaved for like 5 months now and they are soooo hairy lol they look like mans legs. no joke, its gross and it would be so nice to never have to shave again b/c hair immendiately starts to grow back after just a day or so and its really stubbly and coarse. similiar to a man's stubble, god i swear i feel like sucha man sometimes

Coarse black hair is very good for laser treatments, but olive skin is not optimal. There are new lasers out that work on olive to darker skins, but you must ask before you put down that kind of money. Some lasers could do damage to your skin, so be careful.

I have olive skin and dark course hair and have had my upper lip and hands done. My treatments did not turn out to be permanent but I do have to say I'm glad I did it. My hair is nothing like it used to be. It grew back really fine and the treatments lastest for weeks. Especially my hands. With my face the hair was gone for up to 4 weeks.

Keep going back. It will all be killed eventually.

Hmm, I thinking about having this done while I'm still in Japan. The cost rates is lower and some of the places have advance technology for removing hair safely that have not come to the U.S. yet.

Even after 2 years of treatment?
The question isn't how many years, but how many treatments, what kind of machine was used and whether or not you shaved before the procedures.

drkpnk: i have dark hair and olive skin as well, and as a pp said, it is not optimal. the laser works to burn the dark pigment (thats why you can't tan while doing this procedue b/c the laser can mistake drk skin forhair and just start burning everything), and my skin is darker than white. so i do have different levels of re-growth, i'll emplain further....
the lady i went to was a firend. she did not tell me about numbing creams, so when it hurt a lot, she would turn down the heat - the only pain i couldn't bear was on my bikini area, of which i lasered the WHOLE thing. but turning down the heat meant not as effective of a treatment, meant me losing $$.
she also did my upper lip for free...i had i guess you can call 'sideburns' but not so much as i had even noticed, she pointed it out to me. so while she did my lips and 'sideburns' she just ran the laser across my whole face....well she did this over a period of three years (i did not come regularly to see her, she did not mention to me that i needed to go every ___ wks for proper treatment)....it stimulated hair growth on the rest of my face!! so i am currently getting rid of it via electrolysis.
i moved to a different city, and the laser techs here would not do my face b/c there is a 50/50 chance that it could stimulate growth instead of inhibitng it, and there is no way to tell who it will effect in which way.
so i had already had about 8 treatments on my whole body, and i had to do a few more to counteract the not-optimal treatments that i had previously.
My legs: there is about 30% regrowth. the regrowth is only in specific areas on my lower legs. it is in patches and is fine. i can shave and be smooth for while, and then the patches will grow back a little prickly but soon will become soft because they are so fine (and lighter-coloured). currently, i have not shaved since new years and if i pull my pant leg up, you cannot see the hair. my upper thigh has about the same regrowth but it is even rather than patchy, and still a bit coarser. i will probably get another treatment done.
My Arms: it is working great on my arms, i've had two treatments on my lower arms and notice it is going better than any other part of my body.
my bikini. i went to the new place and got it done at a high heat (while using the numbing cream) twice. i did this in order to thin the hair so my electrolysis will go better. i currently use electrolysis only for that area (you have to wait 6 weeks in between procedures if you are switching treatment mode). electrolysis is amazing. the drawbacks are: $$. its about 250-300 for a full bikini with laser (lets say you need it 8 times), thats about $2400. electrolysis is about $300-400/session down, and i go every two weeks. i suppose once its lessened a lot it will only be every month or so. (it can take up to two years in total for an area). there but i chose electrolysis because its permanent and i don't want to deal with regrowth down there. i get ingrown hairs easily and it hurts me to shave there. another drawback is that you cannot shave in between treatments. so it sucks in the summer when you are first starting....but becasue i have done it so much my hair is so fine down there that it will be okay. also you can tan when you do electrolysis.
my underarms: i tend to get them done (lasered)before summer and i don't have to shave for a few months....but like i said, you cannot be tanned while lasering so i have to shave for the rest of the months. i got more regrowth there than i expected. maybe another couple high heat treatments would do me well.
my face: surrently only doing electrolysis and am doing so well with that. i love it.
good luck, let me know if i can help with anything else.

[QUOTE=eve40;2877971]The question isn't how many years, but how many treatments, what kind of machine was used and whether or not you shaved before the procedures.[/QUOTE
I went in for many treatments. I think at first I went in every 4 to 5 weeks for my upper lip. As time went on it didn't grow back for a while so I went in every 6 weeks. I went regularly. For my hands I think I started going every six weeks. After a while my hair took longer to grow back so I eventually went in every 8 weeks. I don't know what kind of machine was used. I'm not even sure if it was "laser" or what is the other kind called, pulsating light or something. I never shaved before the procedures. I always let my hair grow out. Like I said before though. Glad I had it done. I stopped treatments but only because I no longer had use of a vehicle. I think the last time I had it done was in October. I plan on going back though for the summer.
I have a question about electrolysis. Many people have said its permanent. I know someone who had treatment done on and off for a few years but it wasn't permanent. How long do you have to go before its permanent?
