View Full Version : High platelets

Hi everyone
Am new to the forum and after some advice.
After a recent blood test it was found my Platelet level was raised, in the 600's. I then had a repeat test which showed it higher, in the 700s.
I was referred to a haematologist. So the initial bloods have shown that my liver and kidney function is fine and the test for a blood disorder came back negative although this is apparently only 50% accurate.
I am booked to have an abdominal ultrasound to check my spleen and have to go back in 2 months time when he will discuss further tests with me. He has mentioned having bone marrow taken.
I asked him if this could be serious and he said no but looking through websites it certainly seems it could be.
Does anyone have any advice for me?
He has said they will not probably treat me as i am considered low risk, i.e, no blood clots, under 40, not diabetic.
Another thing i keep noticing is big dark bruises on my legs, back of the calves, as if something has burst. Is this part of the blood condition?

Many thanks to anyone who can give me some advice

Hi cath:wave:

Welcome to the boards.
What was the time interval between the first 600 count and second 700 blood test?
Your spleen will be checked to see if its enlarged since a high platelet count may cause the spleen to enlarge. An ultrasound of the spleen would also exclude and abnormalities in this organ. Since its fuction is to eliminate platelets from the body.
A bone marrow test would identify if any abnormalities in the bone marrow are causing it to produce to many platelets.
How old are you?
I am 27yrs old diagnosed with essential thrombocytosis 2 yrs ago have been taking hydrea on and off since then. I also take aspirin 75mg on alternate days.
I did an us scan even though my platelets were over 1.2 million it was still within the normal limits. A bone marrow biopsy revealed my condition. I have no symptoms whatso ever. I worry about the long term effects of the meds and pregnancy issues . But i m dealing with it. Life goes on.
Don t rush . . .. stick to what your drs tell you. Many conditions may cause platelts to increase. However on the other hand they might go down on your next blood work. The imp thing is to follow the prob once you are aware of it.
Good luck keep us posted.

Hi Amy
Thanks so much for replying
The time lapse between the rise from 600 to 700 was about a month. I have since been for another blood test and it was again in the 700s so hasn't risen very much in the last couple of months. I don't know the results of my last time but he said if it was a significant increase he would call, which he hasn't.
When i went for the initial consult he felt my abdomen but couldn't feel that my spleen was enlarged but the U/S is to check like you say.
I am 33yrs old.
Not looking forward to the bone marrow test lol!
Have you been told why you have this condition or is it just one of those things?
I am quite concerned about the bruising i have on my legs as it looks like a burst blood vessel or something and is very dark purple.
Thanks for the advice

There is no clear indication what causes this condition. My heamo traced all my blood tests and noticed that the icreased platelet count started from when i was 16. He asked if anything in particular happened that year . I actually was ill for 8months with glandular fever that year and thinks that it may be the cause. However this is only an assumption.
I used to and still have alot of bruising. . .. i think a platelet count of 700 is enough to cause bruising though i would show these bruises to your dr on the next visit.
The fact that they did not call yuo is actually good news i think.
Don t worry to much .. .stress increases your platelet levels.

Keep us posted
Amy
