hi all. its been a while. i was feeling better after quite a while of being off my PPI (i dont like taking it) but within the past few days the heartburn has increased and the lump-in-throat/"closing throat" sensation is back.
i have thyroid troubles too so its hard to distinguish exactly which problem is causing this symptom. due to the heartburn, i'm guessing this is my gerd kicking back up.
its such a scary feeling i had a mini-panic attack last night over it. it would be really helpful, please, if anyone here who has/had this lump-in-throat symptom just please respond with a yes and/or any explanation of your experience or advice. i really need to hear i'm not alone with this. its so much worse at night if i'm alone, like i'm afraid my throat will close up. i hate the panic component of gerd!
i'm back on my PPI as of today, so hopefully it'll go away quickly.
thank you

That is one of my worse problems...I can't get rid of it no matter what I try.... the lump in the throat and the breathing is by far my worse problem.
Unfortunately You are not alone! :(

Unfortunately this is all related to stress. Believe me, it will not kill you! The more stessed you are, the more present that "lump" will be. Just act like it's not there....mind over matter. Thats all you can do. ;)

Several lumps here! From base of throat to bottom of gullett.
When I swallow water it feels like lumpy veggie soup:confused:

When you refer to the lumps, are they inner lumps you feel when swallowing, or are they visible and touchable on your neck? I get a swollen lymph node occassionally. It's on the right side of my vocal cord. It isn't the lump I feel when I swallow.

Inner lumps...just like when a lump of food or bubble of air stays in the gullett, but it is just a sensation in my case, because I had this whilst
being scoped (I was awake) and there was nothing to be seen! I thought
there would be at least four tumours:(

I had that just after I stopped taking my PPI, runout of prescription and atopped it only for a week and everything went back again, lumps with all the works... So I went back to see my GI and he gave me the same PPI... been taking it for 3 days and so far the lumps sensation is gone.. Iam wondering now if I am really totaly dependent on PPI... Question guys.. how do you get rid of your giddiness and nausea? I just feel like I am always spinning I am so out of balance! Is this still GERD?

Hi ,
I have to add I also get the lump in throat sensation .
I know , It's awful !
When I get it I can't stop swallowing , then I feel the lump is getting bigger and no matter how many times I swallow it doesn't go down .
Every time it happens I'm convinced there is something stuck in my throat .
I agree with candp that it comes hand in hand with stress and anxiety .

hi...about 4 months ago i developed what felt like a lump in my throat...and had real trouble swollowing, even to the point where i thorght i was going to choke.
my dr said it was an enlarged thyroid....he reffered me to a specialist who said it wasnt, he gave me a endosocopy...and everything was apparantly normal...then i had a scan...normal again...blood tests were normal to.
im beside myself to be honest, i feel like my life is on hold...im losing way too much weight even though im eating and i still dont know why i am like this.
can anyone help please...and has anyone had the same symptons.

I too have this and I have it all the time. I find myself swallowing a lot, in an attempt to loosen it or to clear my throat. Needless to say, it does not help at all. My throat feels like there's an SOS pad in it. (abrasive & scratchy). I have always thought it was from my rx meds but have some stomach issues as well.

dear louO7......that s just a symptom of an anxiety attack....if you re a bit stressed or under tension it s very common....i know it s frightening cos though i feel it quite often it s scary ....it s acid reflux. .. or as someone told me recently heartburn ( but i get it without the burning sensation) . i feel a lump in my stomach too but the dr told me it s acid . gas or trapped wind all caused by anxiety or certain foods . in my case it s definately anxiety . hope i helped a bit. take care

I suffer from the lump in the throat thing too:confused: - mine is definitely linked with anxiety, just reading this thread has brought it on  - so am off over the gym to try and take my mind off of it - am on some meds for reflux, but it hasn't made any difference at all, so will do the 4 week course, and then take myself round to the Dr and say, nope don't need to be on them!
It is a horrible horrible sensation and I really feel for all of us who suffer with it.

I get a tight throat feeling and a gagging feeling. Sometimes it feels like it's right at the base of my sinuses, right near the uvula. Other times it feels like it's right behind my tongue, and then there are other times it feels like a ball in the middle of my neck. Usually it's the first two though. I've been told it's from lpr. I have other symptoms of lpr like hoarse voice, regurgitation, raw throat feeling, cough...etc. I've had a barium swallow, showed nothing. Never had a scope though, so I don't know for sure if it's reflux or sinus related or both maybe. I have yet to find anyone with confirmed reflux who has tightness near the top of their throat instead of the middle, so I just don't know. It's definately a scary symptom.

I have been having these symptoms such as lump in throat on and off for about 1.5 yrs now. Little better when I watch what I eat and eliminate most of carbonated beverages, coffee, greasy foods, etc. but the problem seems to me a permanent fixture in my life.
I do notice it is worse in the summer when the weather is hot and humid. But I also have sinus and dry mouth issues which probably contributes to the throat problems.
I gave up on PPIs about 6 months ago on the advise of my gastroenterologist. He prescibed domperidone to me which I also stopped taking. Whether either medication helped or not is not conclusive at this point since the reflux symptoms never went away at any point.

I am only 18 years old and the worst feeling I have ever had without going to the hospital is the throat Lump. Not only do I get that, I get it in my chest too and my mouth constantly fills with slimy gas/spit. I hate it so much and I don't understand why I am getting it at such a young age.

With LPR I've had the lump in throat for almost 2 years. I've been put on several PPIs and nothing seemed to work. One thing I noticed is the faster I ate the worst it would get. Along with taking 40mg protonix I also tried several natural remedies.
1. I chew my food much slower. After putting my utensils down I chew that small bite at least 30 times. My food gets digested much quicker now.
2. I eat 5 or 6 small meals per day instead of 3 giant meals. Our stomach is only the size between 1 and 2 of our fists.
3. I don't drink fluid while eating because that can dilute our alreay minimzed digestive fluids and slow down digestion.
4. I don't eat nor drink 3 hours before bedtime.
5. I raised the head of my bed 5" to keep that acid from rising. During sleep is when most damage is done.
6. Between the meals I drink water on and off all day. You should drink in ounces half your body weight. I weigh 158 lbs so I drink at least 80 ounces per day.
7. I no longer consume food nor beverages high in acid (alcohol, coffee, carbonated drinks, OJ, red meat, artificial sweetneers.....)
8. I relieved myself of that stressfull feeling that it will never get better. Instead I felt optimistic that I will recover.
9. I took probiotics after breakfast and dinner.
I started noticing improvement after just 1 day of these natural remedies. After 16 days I no longer had to clear my throat after meals nor when waking up in the morning.
My doctor took me off the protonix 4 weeks ago. Instead of biting my nails that my acid reflux would return I felt confident that it will remain good.
Well everything has remained fine and I'm sure grateful. It was surely worth it!

I have it too.
Almost everyday, all day..........
It seems to get worse after I eat.
I have been on protonix, and nexium, and nothing seems to get rid of it. I also have problems swallowing.
I also have anxiety from all of these lovely symptoms. I worry about it too much.
I hate this, and I want my life back!

I have it all day, every single day. I used to feel pretty good in the morning and it would come on as the day went on and by evening it was at it's worst. Now, unfortunately it is with me constantly along with ear pain that can be excruciating.

The ear pain is common with acid reflux, GERD and the like. Mine started with a sore throat and ear pain, all on the right side. Mine also gets worse as the day wears on. I am on Nexium 40 mg, for one week now, and tonight I tried the apple cider vinegar with baking soda. I hope it works. I know how you feel as I've been dealing with this for over a month now and some days I absolutely felt like sleeping forever would be an option. Funny thing is it feels better to eat (it soothes my throat), so I've been eating lots more, yet I've dropped 5 pounds. Go figure.

I have that sensation pretty much all day long for the past 5 or 6 weeks (with constant gurgling, light belching although not loud enough to be noticeable to others) with flareups after meals and most of all at night. It feels like a large pill is stuck in the esophageal passageway. I do feel a gnawing near the breastbone and 'soreness' (even when drinking cold water) but no chest pain. Ironically on the rare days when I feel perfectly well I think maybe I've licked this but invariably it comes back. I'm awfully active, fit, eat well (fruits, vegetables, grains, fish) and work out every day as I have consistently for the past 25 years and more. My blood work came out good except for some "slightly" raised liver enzymes. I had this lump-in-the-throat feeling about 4 months ago and it passed after a 2 week dose of prilosac OTC. I do have gallstones but have not had an attack so my doctor attributes the raised liver enzymes to the gallbladder. He hasn't suggested an endoscopy yet.
I haven't needed any medication at all (age 45, no cholesterol or blood pressure meds) never drink alcohol, and my cholesterol is 135, weight is 123 (5'3") and I'm still with this problem. I had a perfectly healthy life until this so its slightly depressing but I'm very optimistic that my condition will improve. My doctor says there is no hiatal hernia (no endoscopy, he just scoffs at that idea based on my lifestyle, healthy history, blood work, EKG, blood pressure, etc)
I'm very adamant and refuse to give in to this discomfort so I bike (spinning on stationary bike at home because I can't really concentrate on biking on the road with this feeling), lift weights, and mow lawn (no power mower) throughout this uncomfortable feeling. I've been on prevacid only 10 days 40 mg but honestly I don't feel much different. I'm hoping it might work after a month or so. You can do everything by the book and still come up with this illness.

Day 17 on Prevacid and the 'lump in the throat' feeling gave way to a constant gas feeling in throat/esophagus that seems to stem from the side effects of the drug rather than the former acid reflux. I now have gurgling pretty often during the day especially up to 30 minutes after the meals. I prefer the gurgling and gas to the lump in the throat but I hope to eventually be relieved of that as well. Still lifting weights (not huge weights just sets of 40, 50 and 60 pounds on my precor machine). I think the weight lifting might counteract any calcium absorptions problems associated with Prevacid. I'll give it more time and refuse to give in to this disease.
