I was tested for anemia, and surprise....I don't have anemia, but my iron serum is HIGH! 184 in a range of 35-155

My hemoglobin is high
My hematocrit is high
my MCV and MCH is also high.

what could this be?

I am repeating the blood test and if it's still bad, I have to see a hematologist.
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!

High Iron Serum can indicate hemochromatosis, kidney & liver problems & can also be caused by recent blood transfusions or injections.

MCV is red cell count & can sometimes be high when your Anemic. There are various types of Anemia, but the most common is Iron deficency Anemia. This has been ruled out because your Iron Serum level was high. MCH is something to do with the weight of the Hemoglobin in your blood. That's all I know about this one.

Hematocrit is once again RBC & a high Hematocrit can sometimes be seen in dehydration or smokers. I found out this information for you about Hematocrit (high level):

Higher than normal hematocrit levels can be seen in people living at high altitudes and in chronic smokers. Dehydration produces a falsely high hematocrit that disappears when proper fluid balance is restored. Some other infrequent causes of elevated hematocrit are lung disease, certain tumors, a disorder of the bone marrow known as polycythemia rubra vera, and abuse of the drug erythropoietin (Epogen) by athletes for blood doping purposes.

High Hemoglobin is caused by the following things:

Living at a high altitude
Smoking
Congenital heart disease
Failure of the right side of your heart (cor pulmonale)
Scarring and thickening of the lung tissue (pulmonary fibrosis)
A rare bone marrow disorder (polycythemia vera)
Dehydration, such as from severe diarrhea or excessive sweating
Kidney disease
Exposure to carbon monoxide
Anabolic steroid use

Hope this has helped you. :)

Thank you!
I'm hoping when I repeat the test it's normal. I was thinking maybe I was dehydrated because I fasted before the test because it was also done at the same time as a cholesterol test. My doctor said not to fast for the next test. I do smoke too, and I know that doesn't help.
Thanks for your response!

I repeated the test and my iron is good, my hemoglobin and hematocrit is good, but my MCH and MCV is still high. I've researched a little and think it maybe due to a folic acid deficience.....anyone have any comments or suggestions? am i on the right track?
