Hi i hope someone can help. For a while i have been feeling unwell, so much so i can not work. My symptoms are: Headache, Visual Disturbence, Dizziness and nausea as well as which can sometimes be an overwhelming fatigue. I recently was admitted to hospital with unexplained Rectal bleeding which was quite scary but no answers given and stopped as quickly as it started, However, still having occasional bleed.
My GP has told me that my platelet count is high at 495 (whatever that means ) and has taken a number of blood tests but really has nothiing more to add.
Could anyone help and tell me what i should do if anything. thanks:wave:

A platelet count of 498 isnt alarmingly high though it is important to have it monitored to make sure it does not continue increasing.
There may be various reasons why you have high plt count. I for example have a plt cnt of over 1.2 million snce i have an abnormality in my bone marrow which causes it to produce more platelets. Up to date i have no symptoms.
Apart from having plt count followed up i think its imp that you find out what s going on re the rectal bleeding . It is not something to overlook. It is very imp to identify the cause.
Good luck

I agree with the previous reply that a count of 498 is not alarmingly high. When I first met with my hematologist 3 years ago, my count was at 750. In the past two years we could get it to come down with an increase of my medicine, but as soon as we decreased the meds it goes back up. I have had it spike up over 1.2 million twice. I have had a bone marrow biopsey done, and all the other tests run, and everything has come back good. The only thing we are going to look into now is that I have a cyst on my ovary. Could that possibly be spiking my platelets.? Who knows, but, I have to get it checked out, and maybe that is the answer. I have been on Hydroxyurea for one year now, and I want off of it. If I don't take it my platelets shoot back up again. I hope this helps you a bit, and just keep a check on your counts. Take care, and God Bless.

May i ask you how old you are? I am 27yrs old and so worried about the long term efects of HU. I ve read that long term use may incease the risk of developing leukemia but my heamo says the increased risk is insignificant. Locally i don t know other people who have taken hu at a young age so it would be great to hear some more.
Thanks Amy

If throughout these 5 years your platelets were always 650 000 i see no cause for concern. It would then be your norm to have slightly higher platlets than the avaerage population. Though if your platelets are on the increase than you warrant further testing.
however you need to be guided by your dr. . . . . if you are not happy with your current one .. . look for a new one.
Good luck
