If you're on the birth control pill, how does that play into things? I.e., say you're at a weight where normally you would stop getting your period, but if you're on the pill, will you continue to get an "artificial" period?

Also, does your period alwyas disappear completely, or for some people does it just become much lighter?

When my anorexia was bad, I lost my periods completely for over a year, but I wasn't on birth control pills either.

I would think that you might continue to have "periods" on the pill simply because the periods you get while on BCPs are not real periods to start with. You don't ovulate on the pill and the "periods" women get while on the pill are really withdrawal bleeds caused by withdrawing the hormones during the placebo pills. That's why pill periods are usually much lighter than real periods to start with. When I took the pill, I always had very light periods, much lighter than normal.

The pill will make you get periods no matter what. The reason your period stops when you get too thin is because your body has a built-in fat sensor -- if it decides that you do not have enough fat stores to safely carry/give birth to a child, it will not allow you to do so. Your body does this by decreasing your hormones to pre-pubertal levels. The pill works to normalize periods by providing your body with the correct cyclic amounts of hormones in order to induce monthly cycles. What is important to keep in mind given this information, is that if you would be unable to have natural periods but are having them because you're on the pill, this is bad, and your periods are completely meaningless. You need to figure out and fix what is causing the loss of your natural periods, because this indicates an abnormality of some sort. Artificial periods do not indicate fertility.
