I take Benicar HCT 40/25 and have excellent home readings averaging around 110/70. I have been taking this medication for about 6 weeks. I was taking DIOVAN but it did not work very well at controlling my blood pressure. Anyway I made the mistake of checking it today on one of those machines at the Pharmacy. My first reading was 142/85 and I waited a few minutes and the next reading was even higher. I checked on the internet about the accuracy of these machines and it said not to use them because they are not accurate. Why do they even bother having these devices in the stores..
They give people false information..

Some of the problems with in store machines are that you are supposed to be still and quiet for about 20 minutes before taking your pressure, so in a store, with everything going on would defeat this purpose. And who knows how many people mess with the in store machine, etc.

You are going for averages with blood pressure. It goes up and down all day. Our pills are supposed to surpress surges and keep us generally in a decent range. Don't get too upset over one or two readings as long as they don't spike way up.

Sounds like you are doing well.

Hi George,

Know what you mean about the store b/p only I had the opposite experience mine was very low like 120/70 when my real b/p was running 120-130/110-115. How's that for inaccuracy!!! I was using a mercury type wall b/p cuff like in the Dr's office so I knew what my real b/p was plus I was seeing the Dr. every other day it seemed. Great that your b/p is so low. Fam

What I hate WORST about the store BP machines is that I'm 6'2" tall and if I get my arm in the cuff right, I am hunched over like I belonged in a belfry in Paris... I can hardly draw a decent breath.:dizzy:

I worked at a grocery store with a pharmacy in the film counter and it was right across from the pharmacy. I never saw anyone do maintenance on the bp machine. Even after kids had messed with it and tore up the cuff, no one came to fix it or anything.

So, do you think these things are reliable tools to measure blood pressure?

They seem to more like a replacement toy carousel for kids to play on while the parents shop.
