*first, i apologize ahead of time, as i did post this in another thread--i wasnt sure which one to post it in*
i just turned 21 a couple months ago, and ever since i have been really depressed. the relationship portion of my life from the past up until now, along with a lot of things i didnt do in the past have been on my mind every single day from the time i wake up to the time i go to sleep. ive been paranoid about how people see me, i feel like they think im some sort of freak. i feel like ive lost my life, like im completely alone, and life i dont know how to get it back. its hard to sleep, but its harder to wake up in the morning. for a while, i wasnt eating, but that stopped soon enough (i like food! )
ive never done something like this on my own, but i have been looking up information from my insurance company and APA about different psychologists but what type of therapy they do is whats confusing me now. psychodynamic and CBT sound like they would work best for me, but i am not sure. can anyone else shed some light on these or any others that might work?
thanks

CBT is considered best practice for depression. There is also information on the net and some good books available so you can educate yourself as well as work with a psychologtist on it. CBT often prescribes homework and active participation; it's not an analysis kind of therapy. There is a lot of education about how we think involved. I have found it very helpful.

I think first ask....what do you want to get out of therapy? What do you want to accomplish? Having those answers will make it easier to find a philosophy to follow.

out of therapy- i just want to see what i am doing wrong, why i still feel this way? and how to stop feelings this way, because its NOT fun. this is the 3rd time in my life ive been severly depressed like this, but the last time didnt last for more than two or three weeks.
what i want to accomplish- i want to turn a lot of things around, how i act and how i feel and how i think, and just be able to accept myself and my past.
i cbt could help with most of that, getting over the past things im not sure about.

Fiyurrr, I agree CBT is probably what you are looking for. What I found to be helpful also was working on the daily issues which cause you distress. I think that all of our issues are played out in our relationships. Take these daily stresses to your therapist to analyze what is going on.

with those goals...I would probably agree CBT is a good place to start. You might want to also consider a counselor. Couselors by trade are more...direct and....I dont' want to say they tell you what to do, but they can interject a little more than a therapist might. Finding one that takes insurance might be an issue though. good luck

I use counselor and therapist interchangeably. What I do seperate out is training - social worker, psychologist, drug counselor, family therapist, etc.

I've been going through depression, anger, anxiety since i was 20 but of course i ignored it.Didnt know it was going to be with me until now.Im 27yrs of age and on the day i turned 27 which was feb 12 this year.I went a met m therapist for the first time.I was nervous.I was proud of myself that i made a first step to stop this depression and figure out why im this way and what it will take to get on the right path.I've been going to her twice a week,we talk about several issues.Abuse, anger,my parents, depression and so on....
I also just started 37.5mg a day of Effexor and talking to her twice a week helps a lot.
I hope you find the right therapist who you feel comfortable with and who will help you understand what you're going through.Medication alone won't help
Message me if you ever want to talk
Best wishes to you

Do it the old fashinioned way. Pick your therapist based on one that you feel the most comfortable with. This way you can share easier with your therapist then many of us can.
