Does anyone have information or experiience with Dr. Bertrand Guillonneau. I am trying to find the most experienced urologist in New York City to perform a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy on me. I understand that Dr. Guillonneau pioneered this procedure in France about 10 years ago and is now working at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in NYC. I assume that he must be pretty good since he invented the procedure. Any information, especially from somone who was (or knows someone who was) operated on by him would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy was originally performed without the aid of robotics (since robotics was in its infancy 10 years ago)....the first 1000 cases performed by Dr. Guillonneau in France were performed without the Da Vinci.

Not a problem! Choosing PC treatment is a matter of "personal choice". Unless your urologist tells you otherwise, there is really no right or wrong with any treatment you may choose. It's about what works for you and nobody else.

It sounds to me like you've made up your mind. THAT'S GREAT!

Unfortunately I can't help you since I had my surgery done by a urologist from Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center who has almost exclusively dedicated himself to robotic LRP.

However, I'm sure that there are many others on this forum that are more familiar with the LRP procedure that you have chosen.

My neighbor had his prostatectomy done by that doctor at Sloan Kettering. I am friends with him and his wife and we conversed due to my fil was diagnosed with pc shortly after he was. The information I can give you is that my neighbor is 71yrs old in excellent physical health prior to surgery (played tennis frequently), had a psa I think in the range of 8 and gleason of 6 prior to surgery and I think it was raised to a gleason of 7 after surgery was done but no noted spread outside prostate, per his wife no problems after the surgery, they really really liked Dr. G.
Also, they flew from Texas to New York to go to him.

Hope this helps,

A.
