View Full Version : Coffee - ok or not?

As a coffee drinker with mild hypertension, I researched the internet on whether coffee raises bp or not. Half the web articles quote studies that say it has little or no effect, while the other half quote studes saying it has significant effect.

John Hopkins University: almost no effect, drink on.

Zurich University Hospital: no effect, don't be concerned.

Duke University Medical Center: causes high bp, releases stress hormones, and leads to arteriosclerosois, artery and heart damage, and ultimately stroke.

Mayo Clinic: raises bp 3-14 points.

So I wonder which is it? Any other concerned coffee drinkers out there?

I'm no doctor, but I know that caffeine is a stimulant. When you take a stimulant your heart rate goes up which in turn makes your bp go up. So yes I'm pretty sure it will have an impact on your bp. How much of an impact, I'm not sure. Your best bet is to stick to decaf.

I have HBP and I only drink coffee in the morning. Caffeine raises your BP temporarily versus salt that is a systemic problem. Moderation is the key.

I drink a LOT of coffee and don;t have a problem with it...I THINK. The reason I say "I think" is that I haven't done without it for half a cenury! :blob_fire

Lenin,

As hard as this is to do (as it was for me), why don't you stop coffee for one week and see what happens? I've read there are bp triggers in coffee (other than caffeine) that afffect the nervous system, subsequently raising bp.

Hi,

Why don't you take your b/p on a reliable monitor when you first get up & then after your coffee? The next day take your b/p again when you get up &
then delay having your coffee. Take your b/p a second time at about the same time as the first day. Compare the results. I just heard a report that 4 cups of coffee is good for one's heart.Of course, your reaction to coffee depends on how many cups a day & how sensitive you are to the chemicals in coffee (caffeine is only one of them). I can't even drink decaf cause I get heart palpitations. Fam

When my BP first started spiraling out of control I noticed that caffeine was giving me palpitations, etc. So I cut it out completely. Cold turkey (keep in mind I had been sick as a dog so the previous few weeks I had much reduced intake). I've now been largely caffeine free for a year.

However, I do drink decaf coffee (which has some caffeine) and I do allow myself to drink a little iced tea and weak regular tea from time to time. I do international travel quite a bit so jet lag without a little caffeine is just cruel.

I think it comes down to the person. If you drink caffeinated beverages and notice a difference in BP or palps, then you're sensitive to it. If not, I envy you and hope you enjoy the cold Diet Coke I still crave!

I could no more do that then I could open a window and fly to Manhattan.
I am addicted, plain and simple...I'd need MORPHINE or better yet DEMEROL for the withdrawal.
I can't even skip coffee before a morning blood test.

"My name is LENIN and I am a coffeeholic!"
(reponse: "Hi Lenin!")

I can sympathize with Lenin on withdrawl from coffee. I think I'm more like Violet in reaction to coffee, although have been drinking it for 35 years.

Lenin,
That just gave me a big ol chuckle. I'm right there with you with the bean juice...never ever gonna stop.

Oh yes! Addiction is the PRECISE word. I easily gave up cigarettes after 20 years of smoking and regularly stop alcohol for months at a time...after years of 9-fisted drinking. I now drink about 50 days a year.

But there is NO way I can give up coffee...none, nada, zero, ziltch. The physical pain alone would be unbearable not to mention the psychological withdrawal.

Coffee-ok or not? I don't know but I do know that coffee is a diuretic and it may be that those of us who retain water benefit by the diuretic effect of coffee.

I suspect like everything else, coffee's benefits/detriments are individual in nature.

But, I, too, can not go without my coffee. I only sip 2 cups in the am, tho, because I experienced increased anxiety when I was drinking about 10 cups/day.

Thanks for the insights...I'll do further research. Am still looking into those supplements, mfischer.
