OK so I have been diagnosed with Gerd & I've started the treatment - Nexium 40 mg a day, plus had advice re diet, & bed head being raised etc. I'm to be on the Nexium 40mg for 8 weeks & then go back to the Doc & then start Nexium 20mg. Hopefully the Esophagus will be all fixed up & the symptoms all gone?!

Perhaps I'm being naive here, but how does one avoid it coing back? The hiatus hernia is still there! It seems to me that just treating the symptoms may not necsessarily cure me for good?! Any comments would be much apprieciated. I'm new to all this! :)

I have been treated for 1 1/2 years and my Dr. said that I'll probably have to be treated for it the rest of my life. I also have a hiatal hernia. I am having an Endoscopy in a few weeks to check things out again. Sorry I couldn't give you better news. I think some people get over it but I have had it since 1974.I hope you have better luck with it than I have. I had it treated many years ago and then other Drs. didn't want to treat it. Take care and follow the diet. It really makes a difference.

I had the very same questions ever since i got my endo done.. I believe you have the same thing as me, inflamed esophagus and haitus hernia

I spoke to my doc recently and i don't recall him saying this problem goes away even though i asked him directly. I spoke to another GI yesterday and he said the very same thing that this is a lifelong issue and you will have to stay on some sort of PPI

On the other hand i read that after 8 weeks of therapy your esophagus can be healed, also on some board this lady claimed her inflammed esophagus went away in 2 years or so. I hope all of us have better luck. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but i was in the dumps to yesterday.
