View Full Version : Mom has uterine polyp, worried about cancer!

My mom (who's 64) had an ultrasound today, and they found a uterine polyp. It's about 1-1/2 cm, or the size of a large marble. (She has also had fibroids for a few years.) There's a small chance it could be cancerous, so she's having an out-patient surgery next Wednesday to have it removed. Then it'll be several days before we get the results of the biopsy on it. The doctor said the majority of these polyps are benign, but of course I'm worried! Can anyone shed some light on the likelihood of this being cancer?

Very unlikely to be cancer, as the doctor said. I had one removed a couple of years ago--no problems. I think it's back again, as they tend to do.

Don't worry until (or if) you have something to worry about!!!! :)

Thank you so much for the reply, Brocallie! If I could ask, how big was yours? I don't know if my mom's is a "big" one or a fairly small one or what.

I don't remember the measurements, but from the sonogram, it appeared quite sizable. Cally

How's your mom doing? Wanted to know what her symptoms are. My response is to not worry you but to give you faith about your mother. I had hysterectomy at age 40 for heavy bleeding, fatigue, and cramping which began as polyps. GYN did DandC to remove polyp hoping that would relieve symptoms, telling me polyps aren't cancerous. After DandC GYN told me he removed polyp so everything should be fine...but he called telling me the results returned from pathologist as pre-cancerous. Had surgery removing everything vaginally. Oncologist told me before hysterectomy I probably had a 1-2+ cancer stage, and if needed during surgery will do removal of lymph nodes, that it probably won't need dissection of nodes since uncommon at early stage. After surgery everything was fine, NO remaining cancer cells or ANY abnormal cells found...with residue where polyp was removed.??? So was hysterectomy needed?? No cancer, just polyp. So I'm really hopeful for your mother because I had these bad symptoms for years, without really questioning any severity. I also want to say just have faith during any pre diagnosis stages, until final diagnosis. I was told cancer, let's do hysterectomy NOW, I rushed to surgery w/o thinking of 2nd opinion. That's a great idea, no rush please. She'll be fine and better off knowing she has more than 1 doc giving their opinion. If I were to do again, I'd never have vaginal surgery. Please tell her to ask about the options, because I believe it may be little more rough recovery from hysterectomy from abdomen, but too many nerves not seen and cut in vagina!! She should keep ovaries if possable!! But if already on HRT for menopause get rid of everything!!!! KIT and God Bless You and Your Mother!
