View Full Version : What should I be asking my doc?

Have just had blood test results, Hb is 11.1, Ferritin is 5 which I believe is very low. My symptoms are falling asleep everywhere, feeling lightheaded but not dizzy or sick, and looking more more haggard than I used to! I am also very sensitive to cold and often have numb fingers and toes.
I have an appointment to see my doctor in a few days and am wondering what type of questions I should be asking... do you think I should request thyroid tests or are my symptoms more indicative of iron deficiency?
Thanks

Hi Kazzi:

I looks like an iron deficiency. But as you will see in many of these posts, that iron deficiency is a symptom and not a diagnosis. Your doctor, I assume will want further testing to find the reason why you are deficient. Do you have heavy periods? He may want to do further bloodwork that would include thyroid studies. I am sure that you will get more responses that will help you know what you want to do. This is just what I assume will happen next. Keep us posted.
Take care.

Phyllis

Thanks for your comments Phyllis, no I don't have heavy periods, they are what I would class light to normal having compared notes with friends! I have never been anaemic before, even after giving birth twice, and I have always been a blood donor. My Hb level was picked up by a finger ***** blood sample during a health check at work otherwise I probably wouldn't have mentioned the tiredness etc to my doctor.
I have no apparent blood when I go to the loo or any other worrying symptoms. Thanks for your input, I'll keep you posted x
