I have been on blood pressure medicine for years. I've been on many diets and it's hard to loose weight no matter what I try. My sister had me use her watch that checks your pulse rate. My pulse was between 63 and 65 (I tried it more than once). That was my resting pulse rate. She thought that was pretty low. We checked my dad's and his was around 75. I'm 49. I go to the gym 3 times a week. My Dad is 79 and has arthritis and doesn't walk much. No matter what diet I try I can't loose weight. I thought after 7 months at the gym I would be loosing weight. After seeing my pulse I remembered about the blood pressure medicine I'm on. I take 50 miliigrams of Atenolol and 20 milligrams of Enalapril every day. Atenolol I remember reading, is a beta blocker and it slows your heart rate down. Is it possible the Atenolol is why my heart rate is so low and actually keeping me from loosing weight?

hi,
This is something you to need to ask your Family Doctor, he/she should let you know what your B.P. should be.
Depends on your current weight hight and well being, a lot of factors to be concider.
I''m thinking your RHR is not to bad maybe a little hi but not bad compared to around maybe some where in between 40/60.
B.P. OF 140/90 OR 120/80 is good.
you may want to ask your Doctor about taking Diuretics if your not taking them already?
Exercise does not have to be strenuous to have beneficial effects, but you should check with your Dr before starting any type if vigerous cardio exercise.
on the ''normal'' side of things exercise is one of the best things you can do for hypertension (high blood presure) and of course weight loss!
I would advise you to check with your Dr, he/she may can change your BPM's to some that will be better for you, or split doasges whatever the case maybe...you need to tell your Dr how you feel at times, light headed?dizzyness'' blur vision ect,,,ect,,
some times Atenolol don't do what its suppose to do its either right on or over does things or under does things if the doasage is not just right and it verys from people to people.
This is something you really should ask your Dr about, you don't mess around with your old ticker girl.
Good Luck to ya.

You seem knowledgeable about Atenolol. Do you know if it effects your memory? I've been pretty forgetful for years and I've been wondering if it's from the medicines? I'm under a lot of stress which has made it worse but even before that I noticed my memory being bad.
thanks!

well I'm not so sure,
only from what other people who take it have told me!
I think it can effect memory in certain people, it effects people in different ways some don't have energy feel tired worn out all the time ect,,ect,, or just the reverse, but then agian this is something you really need to ask your Dr.
The stress your under could play a major major roll in how you feel and how the meds work, you need to let your Dr know your under stressful situations he/she maybe adjust your medcine accordingly/or change to some other meds...different dosage ect,,,ect,,
It can take a long time to get B.P.meds correct the way there suppose to work, a lot of it depends on each person and there health and the way you live.
Talk about memory loss, I ordered me some of that ''Focus Factor'' they advertise on late night TV...Nah'' that stuff don'r work....I forgot were I put it!..;) nah just kiddin..;)
