Does anyone have any solid info on this? I know the FDA doesnt reconize it as a problem - according to them you can eat 2.2lbs a week (about 6 cans i believe). Also went to the health canada page, and according to them the mercury warnings only apply to fresh and frozen tuna, not canned.
but if you listen to the news reports, they lump the canned stuff along with fresh and frozen. im wondering if there is a basis for this?
anyone have a link to a study that actually has shown canned tuna to have toxic mercury levels?

I did a quick search, and most of the warnings seem to be directed towards young children and women who are planning to have children soon.
Albacore tuna appears to be safer than "light" tuna. This is the only thing I could find that came close to being a study. www.dmsc.moph.go.th/webroot/exfood/files/dataresult/38e.htm (http://www.dmsc.moph.go.th/webroot/exfood/files/dataresult/38e.htm)
thanks for the reply. Ive had enough "you shouldnt eat so much tuna, it has mercury in it" comments lately that i decided to seriously look into it.
so fay it seems safe enough

Canned tuna is safe since the fish used are generally too young to have accumulated enough murcury to be toxic. The warnings are for older, fresh tuna, swordfish and the like. I did a lot of reading up on this a year or so ago when I first heard the mercury scare. I could be a case study... If I'm not dead yet, you're all safe. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif
