Hello to you all. First of all, I have terrible medical anxiety. I also have TMJ, and have had ear trouble my whole life. I was wondering if anyone ever hears their heartbeat in their ears? I am just getting over a horrible cold, sinus infection, and it has just started the other day, tho not the first time. My ears were really stopped up for a couple of days. This worries me. Thanks for your time!

I also have terrible health anxiety and TMj plus a crippled neck not a good combination! I find that I have times when I can hear pulsing low grade roar in ears like engine running but only when its very quiet. If you have had a cold then this is common effect as all the gunk in your ears does this. My husband says that he gets episodes where he is very aware of pulsing in ears. He woke up this morning and said I can hear rain hissing on roof - it was a bright sunny day!!!!!!!! He just must be my ears. He DOES NOT worry about his health!

Im 18, And i Have a problem that i always think the worst of a problem, for instance.. if i have a head ache for a while i assume its somthing like a tumor, Or if my leg hurts i assume i have a clogged artery..
But some times it pays off, like one time i thought i had salmonela, and i went to the doctors.. turns out i had Ecoli H0157
Anyway, In october of last year i started having a stinging pain in my chest, and numerous other symptoms i went to the ER, they did an ekg, and chest xray with no problems shown, i went again a few days later, same thing..
no problems..
So i eventually went to a cardiologist and he did a Stress test, ecg, chest x ray and blood test.. no problems,
I had the following symptoms, Heart beats in Ears, and in left arm, sweating, chest pain, tiredness

Has anyone found out exactly what causes this? I have gone to the doctor and had a vascular ultrasound done and am awaiting the results. The young lady who performed the ultrasound said that there is no clogging or blockage and then proceeded to ask me if I had heart problems. Then the doctor warns me to go directly to the emergency room if I have any pain prior to getting the report back. I am really scared. Has anyone gone through this and received a diagnosis? Should I be worried?

Hi all~
The heartbeat sound you all are hearing is called pulsatile tinnitus. There are different forms of tinnitus. Tinnitus itself causes ringing/hissing sounds in one or both of your ears, can be associated with hearing loss and is pretty common. Pulsatile tinnitus tends to affect just one ear and is more like a heartbeat sound, a hum or whooshing sounds and is less common and typically isn't associated with hearing loss. You can ****** pulsatile tinnitus and look into it, typically it's a vascular issue.
I have it and have been dealing with it for over a year now. My ENT tested my hearing, which is perfect and I had an MRI, which came back normal. My ENT doesn't seem to think there is anything for me to worry about.
I'd suggest if you are having these sounds on a regular basis, you should make an appt with an ENT.
Good luck!

Ihave the same issue. I have had the sames tests run as well and I have vistied an ENT. I have found though that if I put my hand directly under my chin (where you would check for someones pulse) on the side of the ear with the problem and press the vain closed, the nose stops. I've been doing this for past couple weeks when the noise has been annoying, but that area is now a little sore. I hope someone comes up with a cure for this I really can not take it any more.

Hi I wanted to share my story with you. I have had this pulsatile tinnitus for about 2 years, steady. Prior to that I would only notice it once and a while, usually at bedtime. I ended up going for a CT scan and they discovered an aneurysm at the top of my left internal carotid artery just below the brain. It was a low risk of rupture so surgery was not performed right away. I spent the next 2 years going to ent, neurotologist, any and everyone I could think of, to see if the pulsatile tinnitus and also sensitivity to sound were a separate issue. All tests came back negative, they couldn't find anything else wrong with me. 5 weeks ago I went for surgery regarding the aneurysm. The cut off the carotid artery (I now have 3). the aneurysm no longer has a blood supply. The neurosurgeon said upon examining it, it was more of a threat to rupture than had been thought. Prior to the surgery we had discussed the pulsatile tinnitus being as some sources say it can have a vascular origin, and we were hopeful the surgery would make it stop. So far, it hasn't! It's still there. I know I still have a good month or so of healing to go from the surgery, I am keeping my fingers crossed, but I certainly am downhearted that the pulsing is still there. If it does not go away, I am going to try cranio sacral therapy, sort of like skull massage, I have heard that combined with relaxation and retraining your mind, it can help. I am not going to bother with the ENTs and neurotoligists again, it was a waste of time. My family doctor says I'll just have to live with the pulsatile tinnitus, but I can't take it. I can't sing in my band anymore, I have terrible sleep, it is really destroying the quality of my daily life. I am very grateful to have the aneurysm taken care of, of course, but I just wanted to let you know my story. Getting rid of the aneurysm did not take away the pulsing :(

I have high blood pressure and rapid heart beat... before I got on medication I would hear my heart beating in my head when I laid down to go to sleep. It was driving me nuts... my heart was actually keeping me awake at night. It was pounding so hard in my chest and I guess my blood pressure was so high that I was feeling my pulse very strongly.
Now that I'm on meds and I have my blood pressure under control this doesn't happen. It still happens if I drink alcohol or a lot of food before I go to bed but I'm trying not to do that anymore.
So, you could very well be hearing your heart beating. Not literally of course... but I guess the location of the vein that is near your ear makes it seem like you can "hear" it... could be the other things mentioned too. But good luck! I hope you figure it out. Its terribly annoying I know.
