For the last 2 weeks i've been running outside a few days a week with my gym buddy since the weather has been nice... and since then I have put on about 5 lbs... which is frusterating, bc I know that it is because of the weight of muscle, but when can I expect it to "top out" or go down? I've been eating OK, but not on a strict diet, should I start one to accompony the running? I'm not sure what to do, bc i've worked hard to loose the lbs and now they are coming back! Any ideas? thanks!

It's not physically possible to put on that much weight from muscle gain in a 2 week period of time. There has to be something else going on. Either water retention or over eating. Plus, even if you were putting on a little bit of muscle weight, running is such a great cardio exercise, you should be taking some of the fat weight off. Does that make sense? :)

It depends on your calorie intake/expenditure as well. I must agree that putting on weight so quickly is rather rare, and would suggest that a large part of it is from water retension, which is temporary (in other words dont be as concerned.)

You dont need to go on a strict diet, just avoid fast food places that you know are unhealthy ie: burgerking, mcdonalds, etc.

You may not even need to cut calories, just be changing where your calories come from will have an effect. Increase the amount of calories you get from protein and decrease the calorie intake from fat and carbs (carbs to a lesser extent).

The same thing happened to me, I started running and gained 4-5 pounds in the first couple of weeks, then it stopped and I dropped them again, one thing I found is to drink plenty of water after your run and thru the day, as you sweat you lose it and when you aren't replenishing it enough your body tends to hang on to what you do get. I wouldn;t be too concerned about it right now, it should stop as soon as your body adjusts to it.

Maybe you're eating more than you think you are. When i first starting working out i was eating more, cause I was doing cardio and weight training 6 days a week. and I ended up gaining 5 lbs in one week. I was very frustrated, and didn't know what to do. So i sat down and starting writing everything i ate the previous week. (from what i remembered) and i was eating twice as much. And mostly high calorie-high carb foods. I went on a strict diet the following week. and I dropped the weight in a week as well.

Sometimes we think we eat healthy, but that's not always the case. Write down what you're eating and count the calories, and you'd be amazed how many extra calories you're eating :)
