Hi

Just curious about this. I was organising my medical file and found the blood test i had taken when i was prego last summer.
When i was 5 weeks prego my HCG was 189 and my progesterone was 12 are these values normal? Slightly concerned about the progest .. .it seems on the lower side to me.
A few weeks ago my dr ordered a hormone profile including FSH, LH, Estradiol, Cort and Free testosterone she said that these were all normal but progesterone wasn t checked.
I have learnt through this board the importance of prog and if theres a prob i really would want to settle it now don t think i could deal with more set backs.

A happy weekend to all

Thanks Amy

Good morning Amy:wave:
That level does seem really low. I just found out on Thursday that I was pregnant and my progesterone was 87.3. My office said that anything over 20 was a good level. I know that when I did my IUI cycles and my progesterone came back 11 and one time 13, they gave me prometrium(supplemental progesterone pills) to help increase that level. You are right progesterone is so important for keeping the baby so that is why it needs to be a good number. I may have had my first m/c because of low progesterone which is so sad because it could have been avoided had my old doctor done something about it!

If the tests your doctor ordered were on day 2 or 3 of your cycle they would not include progesterone, they start testing progesterone after you ovulate (usually around day 21 if you have a 28 day cycle or one week after you ovulate or have a trigger shot). Well, I hope that this info helps and that you are successful in the very near future!!!!

Thank you so much for your reply.
I had my blood work on CD 10 so that s why they weren t checked. I am due for my next blood works on the 21st April and that would actually be around CD21 i ll make sure to it checked. Would i be able to assess the value even if i won t be prego?Up to now we are still TTC on our own . had a setback due to a thyroid prob.
Is this prometrium safe? Is it an over the counter thing? We really have to be our owm drs sometimes. I mean about 5 drs saw my blood result and none of them commented on my low progesterone

Congratulations once again even though i didn t post much ( i don t know much about IVF ) i have followed most of your posts and i am so happy for you.

Thanks

Thanks Amy for the congratulations!

The prometrium is a prescription pill that your doctor has to write for you. It is safe, I know a lot of people who have to take it either to get pregnant or keep the baby in early pregnancy. There are also progesterone suppositories and gel that can be used. With this IVF cycle, I was put on progesterone intra-muscular injections (which are NOT FUN!).

That makes sense that your dr didn't test prog. since it was cycle day 10. Yes you can check the level if you are not pregnant. That is when they check it on the cd21 or a week after ovulation or trigger shot. The level will tell you if you ovulated and if your progesterone is high enough to sustain a pregnancy if you do conceive. When I first started seeing my doctor and he was checking my levels, he said that anything over 10 usually meant you ovulated but he would prefer it to be around 13. This cycle, when I went for the first progesterone test before I knew I was pregnant (it was one week after they retrieved my eggs and before they transferred the embryos back, my progesterone was 49).

I would definitely have them look into the levels because when you did conceive that seemed low. You are so right, we have to sometimes do the drs job and take charge of our own well being. We have to be our biggest advocates!!!! That is why I read alot and when I go to meet with him I have lots of questions and will tell him what I want him to do! I am lucky because i have a doctor who is very supportive and will usually do anything that I request to be done, so I am thankful for that!
Please keep me posted on how things progress!
