How does bulemia affect your monthly period or even stop it for that matter? I am trying to stop and then all of a sudden my period didn't come. I thought I was pregnant even though the correct protection was used everytime. But the test was negative? Is there any way to get it back?

First, have you lost or gained weight rapidly recently (don't post numbers, just answer). For me, I was anorexic, and lost my periods because of that (once my weight went below a certain number, my periods stopped--this was about the same weight I was when I began having periods). Once I recovered and stopped my disordered eating, my periods returned.

The continued purging messes up your electrolyte balance. When your electrolytes are imbalanced, your body is physiologically stressed. The stress will cause your body to ignore non-essential functions like menstruation. As I said earlier, even psychological stress & anxiety or minor illness can delay periods too. How late is your period?

If you are able to stop your ED behaviors, I'm certain your period will return although do realize this won't happen overnight.

My period is a couple days late as of today. I am guessing mid week was when I should have gotten it. And there was a rapid weight gain as I attempted to stop completely before it backfired. One of my friends, I consulted as well, said that a combination of my relapse, exercise, and stress can cause it to stop or come quite late too. If it is because of my ED does it affect my abilities to perhaps have children in the future? (like years from now)

If it is from your ED, it shouldn't affect your future fertility depending upon how long you've lost your period and if any damage is done. From what I've read online, while EDs can cause permanent infertility, most women who recover go on to have children without fertility problems due to the ED. I lost my periods for over a year with anorexia then got them back and now I'm trying for a baby. I do think I have some hormonal issues, not caused by the ED but by birth control pills. My cycles are pretty regular right now, and hopefully with time, the effects of the BCPs will wear off, and I'll get pregnant. I do know the longer you are without your period, the more damage can be done plus you start upping your chances for osteoporosis and bone thinning. But hopefully, you will get your period soon; it's not that late. I have been a week late before just due to stress or a cold.

Can I can still have the imbalance of electrolytes if i'm at a healthy weight? (well i assume a healthy weight is when your body maintains it with only fluctuations on a few pounds). I hope all goes well with having a baby! They are a prescious gift and such a joy to have.

Yes, your electrolytes absolutely could be imbalanced even if your weight is healthy especially if you have been purging a lot lately. It would be a good idea to see your family doctor and ask to get your electrolytes checked. They just do a blood test to check the levels. You should see about making an appointment and getting a checkup; the doc can also listen to your heart (which can be negatively affected by purging and electrolyte imbalances). If you do get your electrolytes tested, check beforehand as the doctor may want you to fast after midnight before the test (I always had it done in the morning first thing).

Ok, I'll see what I can do, I am not sure if I want my family to know about everything and I'm sure that they have to by now.

Can gatoraid or the poweraid stuff help balance them back out. Or the life water from sobe? I know that i've heard somewhere that it helps or works. Maybe?

I think it's best to see a doc. Gatorade or Poweraid might help some, but only if you are able to refrain from repeatedly purging, but I don't know for certain, I'm not a doctor. It is best not to second guess anything, and get those levels checked. In addition, your thyroid can play a role in menstruation, and stress on your body can cause thyroid issues, so you might get the doc to check your thyroid levels as well. I think it would be a good idea for you to at least make an appointment for a physical and get your electrolytes checked along with your thyroid.

Ok, I'll try to find one to go to. (just moved so kind of hard haha). Anyways I was thinking about it and I know you aren't a doctor but you give the best advice ever! well I was wondering if you know how electrolytes get all out of whack from an E.D?

Lana,

I'm glad your period came...

Just thought I would update you--I took a pregnancy test this morning & thought I saw a faint second line so I took a digital test this afternoon, and it read "pregnant", so I'm thinking the ED did not subsequently cause me fertility problems!
