Hi there.
I'm new to the message board. Just finished a 2nd round of IVF and feeling a bit frustrated. Has anyone researched or gone with a surrogate mother arrangement? We're getting great embryos, they're just not taking with me.

Fortunately we have a few rounds of frozen embryos to use, but as nice as our doctors are, the full IVF process is getting old. Does anyone know how many fresh cycles are common before IVF works?

Hi Kait,
Sorry for the frustrations, it can be hard, am still fighting it out with IUI, so cannot say much about IVF but soon the answers you need will pop in. Keep reading the board and you will be fine.

Welcome to the Board Kati and sorry to hear about your negative cycle.
Hey, do not be disheartened as long as there is nothing wrong with you, things will work out.
I also had 2 failed IVF cycles out of two, one was just on March 5th. You can read some of my old posts. I had hydrosalpinx tubes so IVF was the only option for us. This cycle was supposed to be the great cycle with 22 eggs, 9 developed, 2 transferred and still have 7 frozen embies. This time, I ended up asking my doc if something is wrong with my uterus and he started laughing. Now I am going for FET cycle and keeping fingers crossed.

I don't think, there is any fixed number that after these many cycles it should work. with some women it worked in their 1st cycle itself and for some 2nd, 3rd or cud be 4th. Just stay positive and don't loose hope.
You will feel very encouraged on this Board so keep reading.

hi Kati, I seriously researched the surrogate Mother option as I had a very large fibroikd tumor removed where the Doctor literally had to 'filet' (his term) my uterus open and cut it from end to end. He said he 'hoped' I could still get pregnant but no one seemed sure. My uterus had a lot of scar tissue. After many failed cycles I wondered if the scar tissue was hindering implantation and I was just wasting my little eggs and embies. I looked at it enough to realize 1) I couldn't afford it (it's extremely expensive) and 2) I really wanted to carry my own baby I realized that was a big part of it for me... so I tried again myself and got lucky and my uterus took and held up through the pregnancy. The surgery was so vast and big on my uterus that I was told even before I got pregnant I'd have to have a c-section as the strain of labor could have caused it to split open or burst. I had been more worried about scar tissue stopping implantation and also kept developing fluid in my uterus during cycles, maybe as a result of scar tissue, who knows. Had I not gotten pregnant the last time I was going to look again at surrogate since I had frozen embies but thankfully got pregnant that cycle. After all is said and done I really think the uterus is less important than the embies....women up to 60 something years old have carried donor embies, their uterus takes and holds, so unless there is something REALLY REALLY wrong with the uterus I think usually that's not the problem. Older women even pre menopause using donor embies have a really good success rate. It's the embies quality (factors like age, over or under stimulated, etc. all are factors) or the uterus contracting that expells the transferred embies (which has nothing to do w/ the integrity of the uterus), or something else that causes the embie not to take. My embryos also looked 'great' but didn't take until my last cycle. Other factors play into it too. But if you can afford it and feel that is what you should do, check with your clinic and they should be able to give you more info. on surrogates. Good luck!

Hi Twinmommy,
I'm glad to hear someone else has checked out surrogates. I started researching adoption as a Plan B and then realized that surrogates are about the same price. Both are expensive, but going thru IVF just makes me feel like I'm going thru all this stuff and have nothing to show for it.

Do you really have twins? Are they boys or girls? Can I ask how many ivf cycles it took for you?

Thanks again.

Hi Golds,
Wow--you had a really good cycle--22 eggs. You must have felt so bloated. I'm so sorry to hear it didn't take.

When do you go in for your FET? Wishing you lots of luck.

Yes, my lower abdomen used to look so full and tight as if I was 3 months pregnant :) (wish that could come true). As you know, its hard to find out a reason for a BFN so my doc just said, may be we picked the wrong embies so now I am hoping that out of 7 frozen embies, there is a baby or babies for me.
I just finished being on BCP for 21 days, today only I got my chums so gonna schedule for b/w and u/s. My FET will be on 4/23 if everything goes as per the plan.

Good luck for your FET cycle Kati and hope this turns out to be the last one for you.

Hi Welcome to the boards.

I know IF can be so frustrating but just don t give up. Hopefully your dream will come true.
Way back i had looked into surrogacy due to a sticky blood prob i have. However i have since then spoken to so many women who had my same problem and had healthy preg and healthy babies. i spoke to various specialists and was given the go ahead to try.

Wishing you all the best.

Hi,
I really don't know much about surrogate. I have been through IVF twice. I asked my coordinator about number of tries for IVF. She told me about 4 - that they advise people to start looking at other options after 4 tries. I know this is frustrating. I am starting my third round of IVF. I am just tryng to remind myself that it's another new start and that this may be the lucky one. Hang in there!
