Is that bad for you? I'm currently getting my 1st 100% from my Alive vitamin. And my 2nd 100% from my frosted mini wheats at night. I heard folic acid is good for you but I have a concern if too much is bad for you? or is this not even considered too much?

Junior77,

In the NIH factsheet about folate
http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/factsheets/folate.asp
there is a lot of information about folate (folic acid).

This is the latest nutrient to be added to all sorts of supplements and fortified food products, primarily, I think, because pregnant women tend not to eat enough good foods to get enough folate for their babies. You probably are not pregnant, however. :) In general, what we receive naturally from unfortified foods is ok, because all the B-Vitamins tend to balance each other out. The problem is that too much folate tends to make B-12 unavailable for the body to use, and a B-12 deficiency can cause nerve damage if not treated soon enough.

The recommended allowance for adults as 400 micrograms per day, with an upper limit of 1000 micrograms per day.

Since you are probably getting folic acid from a lot of sources (fortified flour and cereals, for example), as well as what is normally found in foods (beans, greens), make sure that your supplements also contain Vitamin B-12 as well as all of the other B Vitamins.

thanks. I think I just might change my dinner to something else instead.

Maybe I need to go back to my cereal at night because of the fiber to keep me full at night. I'm getting my first 400mcg of folic from my Alive vitamin. And my 2nd 400mcg from the cereal. So that makes 800mcg not including what I eat for breakfast and lunch. My Alive multivitamin has Vitamin B6 and B12 and a lot of it. And I'm a male. So should I be fine like this?

Junior77,

As long as you're also getting B-12, you're probably fine with the folate.

One of my favorite dinners is cereal -- enjoy! :-)

Hello Rheanna and others:

I need more information on the relationship between the B12 and folic acid. Is it possible I could have vitamin B deficiency while taking a daily B12 supplement, as well as Centrum (one-a-day)? I eat a healthy diet, few dairy products, not much meat anymore (cholesterol issues). If anything, I worry about getting too much B12 and any possible damage resulting from it!

What do we get folic acid from? Do our bodies make any?

My arm has been tingling for 4 months now, mostly ignored by the doctors because of my health issues. I guess it's up to me to eliminate the most obvious possible causes, if I can.

I decided to find out about testing for vitamin B levels but got confused when learning that a simple blood test is often not enough. I cannot see my doctor supporting my idea regarding the testing for deficiency and justifying the additional expense. I certainly cannot afford to pay for extensive testing as I have been off work for almost 5 months (for medical reasons).

Thank you
