I've been reading a few posts on this forum, and I had to start a thread so that I could share with everyone here.
Quickie history...got injured 6 yrs ago....within a year of the injury I gained 30 lbs. Went from VERY active and a lover of Running, to a walker that was less active. But I kept the 30 lbs :(
Injured again last year, bit more serious. Gained 20 lbs by the surgery date.
Total weight gained = 50 lbs in 6 yrs. This CRUSHED me to find out.
What I've just begun and find to be very comprehensive : Nutritionist Consultation. I found out my Resting Metabolic Rate, and my necessary Caloric intake, and my Losing Weight Caloric Intake. I am actually learning HOW TO CONTROL MY WEIGHT. Its like a Math problem. I hope I do well with it, but I wanted to share b/c it gave me a different way of looking at food, and my weight.
Wish Me Luck!!!! :blob_fire

Please dont think that I'm a know it all because I know I'm not. But one thing I have notice with what you have posted is what I have seen here with our football people who retire. But not all and in your case I could be mile off so if I offend you I'm really sorry as its not my intention to do so. But you said your were active and now you're not. Are you still eating as much as you were when you were active. As while you were active your body was using up all what you were putting in but now, if you're still eating the same but doing less could be the problem, your body doesn't need all of what is going in. This is my take on it and if I'm wrong I'm tatally sorry for that and I will get on my hands and knees to say sorry to you. By the way I went from a just over 11 stone male too a 16 stone male nowand still with a bad back. So I have gained weight and a lot of mine is now from getting older and really less active. All the best from the Tattman.
And once more I didn't intend to offend you.

Babs. We are sitting in about the same place. I have about 40 lbs. to lose and if I could lose just 20 lbs. I would be thrilled to pieces.
I have chosen an on-line versus one on one nutritional consultation. I think you are right that it is very difficult for us with injuries because we can't do as much physically because of our limitations and instead it is easier to lift food into our mouths.
I wish you success in your program and we both meet our personal weight goals soon as well as being on our way to healthier stronger spines soon.

Babs,
I have fought this as well; for a number of years, it probaly has not helped that I have gave up cigaretes and all forms of tobacco 7 years ago. I am clean up to this point. I do not miss either of them at all.
This is where the rotor culp surgery X2 comes in, no more running; hello weight gain. So then I tried speed walking so to speak. I had 2 1/2 miles down to 27 minutes or so. The weight was then starting to drop, then the back problems and leg problems that go hand in hand. After 2 years I as well need to drop 40 pounds, I know tell myself every morning that what I see in the mirror is great, but it would be greater if there was less of me and that day by day it will happen. WE must be strong and great willed in order to do this. IT is another way to improve our long term health. I have lost about 12 pounds after the surgery on the 12th of Feb. So I think that I am on the right track. WE are all different and have different life styles...
Be proud and just do your best, that is all any of us can do.:D

All the replies were right on. And nahhh, not offended tattman. I'm a very social person, so I was still meeting friends out in NYC, and having the long (very high calorie) meals and a few drinks as well. And without the exercise. Big No No. Or the picnics, beach bonfires, and weekends down the shore/at the hamptons. Traveling to Mexico, St Marteen. And ever since my 1st injury, I have this whole live today style. But after I got injured again last yr, it was a total mess. I went from again...totally active to nothing. So, its totally my fault. I mean, Yeah, my back is a mess and I cry a lot b/c of pain, but walking won't kill me, and I can still just cry when I walk. Its important to help yourself. No offense to people on this board, but I wanted to throw out a suggestion, b/c I wanted to make sure everyone saw that there is a way to slow down the wt gain that people are having b/c of the drugs, or the loss of activity.
I'm not heavy looking, so, its kind of weird to try and talk to my friends about this. I' was always a big runner and exercise person, so I think my body type just from previous activity, kind of stays a certain way, even though I've gained weight. If I told any of my friends that I needed to lose 50 lbs, they would be like, "don't go overboard" so I just kind of keep that subject to myself. Which is not good.
But b/c I was soo active before, I prob kept the weight off b.c my activity level was so high that my high claorie lifestyle did not matter. Buit I did not understand this until I saw this Nutritionaist. Thats why I wanted to share this with everybody. it opended my eyes. And its a Unisex way of getting back in shape. Keeping healthy is the same for men and women...other than the muscles vs water weight thing. LOL.
Roy...I hear ya...I quit smoking in Oct. And that is definitely a big reason too for a few pounds added.
dietdrpepper...thats great! online or in person, same thing. I'm a bit ADD so i need a person in front of me to settle me down. LOL. Lets keep eachother informed of how well we are doing, ok?
sherry, I'm jealous of you. it sounds like you are walking and swimming, thats great!!! You are already ahead of the game. What do you do in the pool?
More replies...keep em coming.

Wow. I started this thread b/c I was reading about so many people's concerns on weight gain. I thought it needed a thread. But I guess I'm the only one that felt like talking more about this. Umm.
I'm not too upset about it b/c I have started doing something about it. But, I was upset a few months back, and I just thought it was a bigger problem among people here on this forum than the responses have shown. Maybe I can get Shawley to post it as a new thread...then there would be more people interested in responding. LOL.

I weighted 176 before my last back episode 6 months ago, 3 weeks post op 201, 8 weeks 192. It will be rough going back to my regular work out. I have slowed the calories down, but the percs, neurotin and steroids, it was hard not to eat. I am off steroids and percs, I am slowing down the eating and increased walking/biking. I wish I could give birth to the 20 lbs. monster :)

Babs sorry I did not see this post earlier, this whole comp thing is driving me nuts it takes for ever to respond to or even start a new thread. As far as the weight gain I am totally there with you. I am one of tose people who talked about it numeriuw times. Babs I am so fustrated i do not know what to do, this weight gain is killing me inside and out, I look a complete mess. Now I have never been thin, but thick and shapley, after this back incident the pounds just kept creeping on. I just started being more active the past week because I am able to move without severe pain and I have tries changing my eating habits, but threw it all can you believe I gained 10 lbs this week. I know my cylce is dur but I never put on that much before. It has to be these meds and I mean if they werent making me feel better I would just throw them all in the trash! I go back to LA weight loss friday, they called today because I have been mia sicne the back thing and she said they will talk to a nutritionist in reagrds of the meds and the best plan for me. I hope something helps soon, So far since injury in nov. 06 I have gained close to 30 lbs.
Babs i am sorry you did not get that many resposes to your thread, but I am happy to reply and will cont to reply. I am sure some others will do the same. I am wishing you the best ok.

Hey Babs!! I am here. Sorry I haven't responded more to you. I CARE! I have been a little off today. Some might say I am all the time but today has been super hard for me. Little sleep last night, pain, etc. I am sure you can understand the drill and I don't have to go into anymore detail than that.
I have been so good for the last two weeks but we need to discount today totally. I got into sour jelly beans and lets just say...they were really good. :)
I know in my heart that this extra weight is not good with back problems and I am going to try my hardest to land walk even if it is baby steps along with walking in the pool and doing light stretches in pool.
I want to try and look more at the weight as baby steps too - 5 lb increments versus 50 lbs. I plan on rewarding myself for each 5 lb. increment. After all this weight was not put in a 50 lb. increment, I put it on slowly and it will take weeks to get it off.
Good luck and I look forward to checking in with you.
