View Full Version : Blood Results Good, But Confused

I received my blood results from two weeks after 5 weeks of IV iron infusion.
The results are good, but almost too good. Please let me know what you think. Especially the ferritin.

Hgb was 8.4 now 11.3 (12-16) still low, but better

Iron was 25 now 64 (37-170)

Ferritin was 4 now 77.4 (10-82) is this possible????

I thought it would take months maybe even years for my ferritin to rise. I thought it may be up a couple of points, but over 73 points! I am glad about it, but could this be right?

Yes that can happen. Its ok. As time goes by the Ferritin will line up with the rest of the counts assuming there are no other physical problems. The Hemoglobin should also show a higher level soon as well. You probably want to look at the total iron binding capacity test, which tells you whether or not things are working as they should. The TIBC should be low if the iron is working well. The TIBC is usually very high on Iron deficiency anemia.

Phyllis,
That's amazing news! REally terrific.

I hope it keeps going up. You must be feeling tons better now that the hgb is up. Now it just needs to keep going a little more!

Thanks for the replies. I am feeling better, but I still like my afternoon naps. Of course it doesn't help that I start work at 6 am.

My TIBC is lower it was 463 and now is 339.

Thanks for the info.

With your new numbers, do you still feel any light headed, SOB or chest tightness? Dr only gave me once iron infusion. Wait for 4 weeks then have a blood test. She'll review after 5 weeks from the infusion. I wish I can get half of that as yours. Do you know? How long you can keep that numbers up like that?

Phyllis, What wonderful results! You must be feeling soooo much better! Does your doctor feel that these numbers will remain in the normal levels without any more iron infusions?

Hi Everyone:

I will see my doctor on 4/13/07 and see what he has to say. I am curious about how long it will last and do we continue to try and find a reason for the anemia.

The lightheadiness and dizziness is gone. I still like a 20 minute or so nap in the afternoon. But, considering all the work going in my home and the time I have to be at work, I guess I am doing pretty good.

Take care all.

Phyllis
