View Full Version : terrifying popping noise with fever

So I was diagnosed with viral lab a few years ago. I've never really been the same since then. I've always had some dizziness and tinnitus and ear pressure. Well lately there have been a lot of strange noises and tickles in my affected ear. I really should go back to the otoneurologist to test for Meniere's or something. I just found out my grandmother suffered from Menieres!

I had a severe stomach flu a few weeks ago. My fever was quite high, maybe 102. I rarely ever get fevers, so I kinda forgot what it felt like. I started experiencing increased pressure in my ears and hearing this LOUD pulsative noise. It was almost like a sound of the TV being turned off only 100 times louder and scarier. It was not constant, I maybe heard it 6 times over the course of the night. In both ears, not just my injured ear.

It went away as soon as my fever went down, but what was it? My god it was horrible.

Hi Loralei,

If you had the flu, it is possible your ear was affected. Possible ear infection, sometimes you dont have pain associated, or possible effusion of th emiddle ear due to swelling in the throat (adenoids). I am not sure what sound you heard, but if it was ears popping, then it could be your eustacion tube... If it was like a loud ring, I get that sometimes, but it dissapates... Its just a form of tinnitus.

it was so weird it was more a popping with a wooosh than my usualy ringing. Although the ringing was present as well.

I know tinnitus can present in other forms... ringing just seems to be the most common. Some people can hear their own heartbeat
