Is it possible to be tested for food allergies...it come back normal...and it be a false reading? I have been having trouble with food lately. I have never been allergic to anything before. I get a lump in my throat and sometimes it feels itchy or swollen.

It took a couple of weeks before I could even be seen by an allergist and I lost several pounds because I was freaked about having a horrible reaction of some kind. But after the test on Tuesday, he said it had a 98% accuracy rate and that I had no food allergies and to go eat anything I wanted. He also said he thought it was hormonal related to my nerves. But today....I took a spoonful of macaroni salad from a local BBQ restaurant....and within 3 minutes my lip was itcy and I then started feeling a lump in my throat! :dizzy:

Am I nuts.....or could the test give a false negative reading on all these foods?

Usually the more sensitive test for food allergies is a blood test, not the skin test. But then again, do you have any other allergies? Are you aware of the reactions to certain nuts by people allergic to certain trees? There is a correlation but you don't say if you have other allergies.

Then again, it may be some additive that wasn't tested for. Or have you tried to isolate the offending food?

No I have no nut allergies either. He tested me for peanuts and tree nuts....common foods.....vegetables....fruits....meats. ...fish and shellfish. I forgot that I did have what he called a minimal reaction to cherries. Coincidentially....I have never liked cherries.

I did test positive to maple trees and mold....but those were fairly slight according to the Dr....and evidently so because I have never had itchy watery eyes, sneezing or runny nose during the spring or fall.

Sounds like it may be oral allergy syndrome. Did he mention that? You can find a lot of info on it out there and see if it might be the problem. One reason I thought of it is the itchy and swollen lips and the macaroni salad as that usually has raw fruits and veggies in it. Check it out.

He didn't mention anything about that. Just basically....you have no food allergies.....I want you to go eat. He said he felt since I have just entered that stage in life where my hormones are beginning to fluctuate that he feels it is all stress related to the fluctuations. geez! A nice way of saying your hormone challenged and flakey! LOL

I've never been an anxiety ridden indivdual or high strung. I was just very alarmed today when this suddenly happened again. And I've felt bad all afternoon...with mild dizziness and ear ringing too since the food.

Thank so much for your input....I will ****** oral allergy syndrome. I don't want to call the office up on Monday morning and have them shrug me off, since the tests were totally negative. I mean I had no redness or whelps....nothing. Only the tiny little marks where the plastic points were...and those even went away very quickly.

It is possible that it is an allergy only triggered by ingestion. I have a few of those and they are violent. This is what I believe Titchou is referring to as the oral allergy syndrome. Also it took me have a week lone skin contact allergy test to determine I had some serious contact allergies. One of which is an emulsifier (keeps chemicals in a fluid suspension) the other is a common preservative.. in everything from you shampoo, condition, lotions, to cakesm precooked meat etc.

I was loading my self with this stuff and finally realized that is was making my body and me hypersensitive to all my allergies.

Sincerely,
MG

I have been through rounds of skin and blood testing for allergies. I am highly allergic to pineapple. Even a tiny bit of juice makes my throat swell. I was negative on both tests for pineapple but it was discovered while using a food log. I hope you find out what is causing your problems. I still have through swelling issues from time to time but we can't pinpoint the food. We suspect it is some sort of seasoning or additive that they can't test for...

Vickie, as Tichou said the blood test is more accurate for the food allergies. Our allergist told us that only 25% of the people respond to the scratch test even though they are allergic. Also, the allergist only tests for IgE allergies with the blood tests. Some folk's allergies are IgG which is a different blood test that alternative docs do. I poked my daughter with an epi pen over an IgG peanut butter allergy. Her IgE was negative for all foods but positive for many, many IgG food allergies. Many allergists think that IgG allergies do not exist because IgE are the allergy antibodies.

how could allergists that attend the same continuing ed symposium's have totally different views on scratch testing? Go figure. This allergist said the scratch test is so sensitive now that it has 98% accuracy, and that I had the same risk as the general population with regards to food. So he wanted to totally put my mind at ease and to go out and eat period.

He also said the blood test did not have near the accuracy and was not used anymore as the gold standard. That the scratch test with commercial serums were now the gold standard. I have ******d that and it appears that's what the foundation recommends too.

I'm beginning to believe my symptoms are truly hormonal related as I have never had any food allergies in my life before this.

Vickie, my daughter was sick from birth and it took me until she was 4 1/2 to find the correct doctor to bring her back to full health. Everytime that I took her to a doctor and they told me that nothing was wrong and there was nothing to do I took this as "this doctor just doesn't know but this doesn't mean that there is nothing wrong". Doctors are not gods and I take info from them and keep collecting information. Many doctors feel that if they do not understand it or the medical community does not understand it then it simply doesn't exist. This is crazy thinking. There are many things in life that we do not understand but they still exist. What I have learned from all of this is that you have to take your health into your own hands and do your own research and get as much info as possible from all sources and never believe a doctor who tells you that nothing is wrong when you know that something is. Good Luck.
