Hello,

Can anyone help? My left arm has been tingly 24/7 for 4 months now. It's mostly the lower part, including the hand. The numbness comes and goes but the tingling is always there. Very annoying.
It started at about the same time I went on the meds. I know that some medications might cause this effect - but in just one extremity? And this long? It is not the carpal tunnel syndrome (as all of my fingers are involved, including the little finger). My BP specialist dismisses it as not BP related, therefore, not his problem. I have yet to see a neurologist..no appointment has been made for me. I complained about it several times to my GP and was told I needed to focus on this and on that, da da, da da. Can any of the BP meds be responsible for this? (It could be related to my other problems.)

Thanks a lot!

i get the tingling sensation too. mostly on my hands/arms and feet/lower legs. i don't know what's going on and was recently diagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis. but haven't read anything about numbness as one of the symptoms. this has been an on going problem for like a month now. and it is annoying. so does high & low blood pressure give this numbness??? i've been trying to find an answer myself. so ur not alone.

Iona,

thanks very much! I do hope we'll get to the bottom of this. Would you mind mentioning this to your doctor next time you see him/her? Unlike me, you might be able to get some answers.

Flowergirl,

As far as side effects go, anything is possible. Side effects get worse, get better, come and go, and only happen on one side and not the other...who knows why?

Based on your observation that these symptoms started about the same time as you started your meds, it's very likely that these are side effects. Did you check your drug sheets to see if your symptoms are listed? The symptoms may or may not be on your drug sheet and your Dr may give you the run around (I've had a similar experience) but if the symptoms are uacceptable to you, you have the right to insist on different meds. I don't know what the half life is of the drugs you are taking, but I've found that it only took a missed dose or two for my symptoms to ease up or disappear. My symptoms almost always disappeared completely within a couple of weeks after disco'ing. I'm not telling you to miss a dose--but instead to work with your bp doctor first to rule out meds because it should be the first step of identifying the problem.

PS Sometimes, given the stress of being in the doctor's office I'm not as assertive as I would like to be...I often get better results by calling my doctors' office from my home to "request" changes.

Bethsheba,

thanks for replying to my post. I will start checking the info sheets for known side-effects of these drugs to see if this can be attributed to any particular one. Several meds were tried initially with unsatisfactory results. I don't know how many more are left for me to try. My hypertension is severe. Stopping the meds (skipping a dose) is not an option.
I am finally starting to get decent BP numbers (147/99 this morning). This is thanks to all the supplements I am taking; plus apple cider vinegar, oatmeal, green tea, etc.etc.) I will insist on being referred to a neurologist by my GP. This is basically what the BP guy suggested regarding my tingling arm. (I take it he does not think it has anything to do with the meds).

Yes, this is a symptom of hypothryroidism. I was diagnosed with this in November and have had issues with this before getting my meds optimized. (I also developed high BP when diagnosed Hypo which is stablilizing now as well. Just weaned off one BP med, working on the second.)

You might try a B12 supplement. Neuropathy is supposed to be a sign of B12 insufficiencly. I had bought some sublingual B12 (2500 MG) to take when my tingling was at its worst, but held off taking it until my doc tested all my levels. My B12 tested at 536 (200-1100) which my doc said was 'in range'. Later a Naturopath told me they suggest B12 injections for anything under 800 so I started taking the supplements that night. The next morning my vision issues were IMMENSELY improved. I thought my vision issues were just thyroid related and did not know that B12 could affect that as well.

Heckofagal:

Thanks for your input! Interesting. I'll have to get myself informed on this condition. I remeber one of the doctors at the hospital mentioning something about thyroid levels being too high or whatever. I am assuming they had looked into this. I did not know about the vitamin B12 insufficiency demonstrating itself by tingling, and that one could be tested for it. Will look into that also and ask the doc to include it in a blood workup next time.
