I've read the benefits about Glutamine and I was wondering if the benefits justify buying some. But my protein says that it has some in it and I was wondering what a good amount to take is, because I'm sure my protein doesn't have a good amount.

There is some controversy on whether or not it actually helps to spare muscle, but just in case, I take it anyway (~20g/day is standard.) Its effect on the immune system is definitely worth it though. Since taking it regularly, I have only *started* to feel sick once or twice in the last year - of course I have no emperical evidence that Glutamine is the reason, it seems to be the only constant though.

dude 20gs of glutamine a day is way high no wonder you're feeling sick your overdosing on it
justanotherday, you are wrong.
most believe you have to take in at least 20g/day in order to be effective.

also, justanotherday - the point was that she has not succumbed to being ill over the past year, not that glutamine made her feel sick as you suggested.

Reading up on Glutamine a little bit it does sound like something that would benefit me. Dosage is where my question comes up. I read Naxis say she takes 20gms per day and I think I had read that somewhere else too. I was looking at several different brands online and the dosage went from as little as 750mg in a pill form to up to 10gms in a powder form. 5gms seemed to be what most of them were. Any ideas on what a proper dosage would be and why? I lift usualy 5 days a week intensely for an hour or more and am 5'10, 175 pounds. I take whey protein and creatine already. Also any preferences on pill or powder form? How's the powder mix with water and taste? Any favorite brands?

To answer your orginal question, most proteins that contain Glutamine don't contain enough of it to get you near the 20gram mark. Capsules are a joke. They have usually less than a gram per capsule. I would recommend the powder. EAS makes a big jug of it that you can buy online for under $50 and it should last you a couple months.

Get the powder. The tablets are far too expensive. You can just throw some in with your protein shakes.

Also to note... Glutamine powder doesn't taste like anything. It dissolves in water or juice or whatever and doesn't alter the taste. I usually have 2 small water bottle (16 oz.) with 10g (~2 teaspoons) each of glutamine each and KoolAid sweetened with Splenda and drink throughout the day.

Thanks for the info. I bought some today. I'll share with you what I was told at the supplement store. First of all I bought the AST GL3 micronized L-Glutamine. The guy claims this is the best but I'm sure there's a lot of difference of opinion there. Also this product is 10gms per dose. He suggested taking 2 doses per day preferably on an empty stomach. He suggested I not mix it with protein as it then competes with the other proteins for absorbtion. He also said a lot of people he knows feel an extra pump after taking it for a little while like you do with creatine but not to the extent you do with creatine. He suggested taking a dose first thing in the morning and right before bed. He says taking it right before bed is the best time to boost the growth hormone production. Anyway the stuff is pretty expensive at $20 for a two weeks supply so I'll give it a go and see how I like it.
I also noticed that the EAS Myoplex Mass I take post workout contains L-Glutamine but it doesn't say how much. I'm curious if anyone knows how much it has. Probably hardly any but I'd be curious to know. As for mixing it with protein I'm not sure I buy this guys idea that it competes with other proteins for absorbtion. Assuming this is true anyone that works out like crazy and eats frequently and supplements with protein, creatine, etc doesn't go very long at any point without putting something in their stomachs which is going to compete with something else for absobtion not to mention how many supplements out there already mix different substances together like creatine, protein, glutamine, taurine, phosphates, and the list goes on and on. Also I noted that my creatine (Sci-Fit Cell Fit) contains 1gm of L-Glutamine per scoop while my protein contains no L-Glutamine. My point being that it looks like there are several products out there that already have a small amount of L-Glutamine in them although not nearly the 20gms you need.
