Recently my girlfriend of over a year has contracted genital herpes. She was tested last summer and so we are positive that this is a recent development. I was tested shortly after this news and do not have genital herpes. One thing my doctor did say though is that I have oral herpes. My younger sister has had canker her whole life, apparently it is just in our blood, but I have never had one that I know of. So is there any way possible that I have given her genital herpes through oral sex? Or should I assume that she has been seeing someone else? This is a very emotional time, I would appreciate some help with this one.

Hi,

Canker sore is not herpes. It's a completely different disease.

Sorry, but yes, you may have passed herpes to your girlfriend through oral sex.

She needs to be on suppressive therapy to limit outbreaks. You need to learn precautions for sex to avoid passing it back to your genitals.

I'm not aware of ever having an outbreak. The only thing I can think of is if I had a sore somewhere in my mouth that I just didn't notice. Does this sound plausible?

yes it is totally possible ur gf got herpes from oral sex with you. you need to ask the doctor which type you both have. if your doc says u have type 1 (oral herpes) this could mean ur gf also has the same type as you but just in a different area. people used to think that HSV1 stayed in the mouth and HSV2 stayed in the genitals, but now it is known that they can both be passed on to different areas of the body.
if she has type 2 however that could be a different story, it would prpbably have come from genital contact. BUT in MOST cases people with type 2 dont show and symptoms so you can never know where it came from, how long its been there for. apparently someone could have it for many years without knowing then will get an outbreak.
