View Full Version : Meds question

So, on the first appt. with my doc my dad and I had to give him a little overview of myself. My dad told him about my mom (haven't seen her since I was 3, don't remember her well) how she tried to commit suicide a few times and was pretty moody.. and I guess I was sexually abused, which I have no recollection of, but I said that to a child psychologist I had when I was like 4-5 so I'll believe it. Really not the point though.

So my doc predicted she was probably bipolar, I won't argue since he's more educated than I am.

I'm a pretty quiet, passive person.. no lashes out at people, just keep to myself mostly. Not moody, don't think I'm bipolar, which I think is the main trait of it. I'm being put on these meds, Lamictal and Lithium (Lithu Carb as it says on the container) which I did a little research on and they all seem to be Bipolar meds.

Just curious if this is a good diagnosis, if anyone/anyone they know has had similar situation where a parent or someone had bipolar and it was linked to them in some way.

Depression and anxiety run on my mom's side of the family. We all take meds. I don't know much about bipolar, but I bet it's also hereditary.

Ok...maybe I"m missing something...so your doc (regular gp or psych?) is putting you on meds.....as a precautionary measure?

I was refered to this psych by my pysician, for depression. Told the psych the mom story and put me on these.

That's interesting. BiPolar certainly can be passed down genetically as it's a biological condition. But I"m not sure I would medicate as a precaution without any real symtoms. Depression and bipolar are often diagnosed together. But if you aren't having symptoms, why medicate? Treat the depression....you may never have a mania that you have to worry about.

I dont' see this as hi cholesterol or something that can build up over time and cause some problems. You might end up taking more meds to combat some side effects of lithium, plus you need to have your liver monitored. I can't say I agree with it if you aren't symtomatic. But...the doc knows more about your situation.

If you have any questions feel free to contact your psych. Lamictal is used for unipolar depression too. Without any real knowledge about your background or previous medications, it is hard to give advice. Good luck!
