Hello! I'm new with a few questions. I have Crohn's disease. Me and my husband are making a decision on TTC. I think we have decided to go for it, but I haven't talked with my doctor yet. We already have two children which I was untreated at the time of pregnancy. The second pregnancy suffered a little at the end due to my disease. (I went into pre-term labor because my cramping in my colon, but it was stopped and I continued a healthy pregnancy) I think with meds to control it this time around, I shouldn't have any complications. But i'm not positive the meds I'm on are ok with pregnancy. I know of two that I am on I think are safe: Remicaid and Lialda, but right now I am coming off of Prednisone and will likely get back on Entocort. Those are the two i'm worried about. I'm also taking Azasan and am unsure about it as well. I plan on discussing this issue with my doctor before we go through with it, but am really worried he may seem upset with our decision and tell us not to TTC. We really want more kids, atleast one more. Is there anyone out there who has a similar experience? Anyone know anything about these meds?

I don't know anything about the meds, but my best advice is to look them up on the web. You can usually find a website that is specific to each med. (as long as they're the brand name. if they're generic, search for the name brand and look that up.)

Usually the website will have warnings that go along with the meds. It might say something like "do not take _____ if you are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant." At that point, then obviously you should wait.

Basically, remember this: your doctor works for you. He has no right to be upset with you over your decision to want more children. No right at all. He can say "It would be unwise" or "I advise you not to get pregnant" but it's not within his right to actually be angry.

If he IS angry, or he says that it's impossible, then I would suggest seeing another doctor...one that is willing to work with you on different med combinations that would maximize your contraception goals.

hi, i agree with marine wife,do research on the internet! do lots, on alot of different sites about each of your meds. it might be an idea to research the meds before you go to see the doctor then he will see your serious and know that you know what your talking about!
as for your doctor getting mad, if it wasnt for people getting sick or needing medical advice, doctors wouldnt have jobs lol. they are they to provide you with a service, not the other way around. if you dont feel comfetable talking to your doctor, then my advice would be to find one that you do feel happy with, because after all, you dont want to feel unable to discus things you might need to discus!
hope all goes well for you,

Thanks for the advice! I love my doctor, but last Summer he specifically said "do not get pregnant ok", but that was because I landed myself in ER with a major flare up. It's been almost a year since that happened so i'm hoping to get the green light now. I guess i'm just worried because that's the last thing he said about it. I just hope he understands. :) I will look up the meds too. Thanks again.

No problem...let us know how it works out! I'm curious to hear what he has to say about TTC on medications.

Hello! I had this same discussion with my doctor when I started TTC. I take heart medication for tachycardia (fast heart beat) and had asked the pharmacist if it was ok to take while pregnant. He said no way. Well his actual words were "If you were my wife I wouldn't let you take it while you were pregnant." Then I decided to just ask the doctor what they thought. They stated that even though there was a slight risk that my baby could be low birth weight, that it would still be ok to take during pregnancy. I had to make that decision on my own, and decided to trust my doctor. I am now 29 weeks along and my baby is just fine. A lot of mediciations are going to say things about taking them while you are pregnant, but honestly a lot of that is just to cover the drug companies butts'. So ask your doctor. If they really think it's too risky, they will tell you that. But ultimately it's up to you. Whatever you decide, good luck! I am sure everything will turn out fine. :)

I'm also wondering about taking medications. I have arthritis and take Lodine which is an NSAID. My research has said to definitely not take it during last trimester, but I'm nervous about being on it if I get pregnant and before I found out. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this particular drug or similar ones in early pregnancy?

You should really just ask your doctor about specific medications.

What I learned today from my doctor is that when it comes to pregnancy, there are 4 categories of medication.

A- completely ok
B- alright, with stipulations
C- questionable, effects not known
D- absolutely not

So check with your doctor, see which of these categories it falls into.

hi

I have the exact same problem. Was diagnosed with essential thrombocytosis its a condition where my bone marrow produces too many platelets. The latter can result in clots anywhere inside me and the baby. The treatment i take for this condition is class c . What i have decided is to take the meds for now . Once i am prego i ll stop them and take heparin hopefully it will be enough to keep my platelets within control.

I would advice doing lots of research . . .then collecting all the info and questions you have and take them with you to your dr. In my case the condition is not so common so i took variour opinions even overseas.

Good luck

I don't know what meds. she is on but a woman I work with has Chron's and is preg. with twins and I know she takes meds. right now because we were talking about it just the other day. She is taking prednizone and something with an "A" (sorry I don't know specifics). She's doing great and actually says when she is preg. her symptoms subside and bit and it isn't until she stops nursing that she gets a major flare up.
Good luck!
