I've heard a number of reasons why we get "stitches" in our sides. Some say it's the organs bouncing around and others tie them to lack of oxygen in the blood. I'm sure there are some on this board that could explain better why they occur. But they tend to appear most in persons who have eaten too recently before their workout. So,try to not eat within two hours or more before running. I probably have a similar running schedule to your boyfriend and that is the only time I get them now. However, at one time, I got them nearly every time I ran. They just seemed to disipate the better my endurance got. So, if you really would like to become a runner, then I suggest when you get them just slow down until they fade. You can run through them, and with time I think you will have them less frequently. Hope I helped some.
