Hi everyone,

Come on now, pretty please, surely someone else is taking these. I don't want to OD on fish oil! I heard it was good for arthritis and heart. Thanks, Bren

Well it depends on the person. My dad used to just take one fish oil pill a day and over time it got rid of his headaches. I think he took like 1000 MG or 1300 MG. Just look on the bottle and see how many you're allowed to have. Does it say like up to 3 a day or do not exceed over X amount of MG?

Hello,

My guess is that the dosage depends on the type of each supplement. I have two different ones here. One is Omega3 Super Concentrate EPA400 DHA 200, taken 3x daily 1 capsule each. I just bought another type (3 bottles of this - on sale) which is called Wild Salmon & Fish Oils 1000mg EPA180 DHA120, not nearly as concentrated as my old one. This one is also taken 3x a day 1 capsule each time. I do wonder if they are both equally beneficial, given the differences in the content of EPA and DHA.
Can anyone tell me? I want to take the best there is.
I might have to talk to the pharmacist again.....

Omega3's are good for the heart and brain function.

Depends on why you take it. Personally, I take 3g a day of EPA and about 1.5g DHA. Those are the two important forms of Omega 3.

Assertive,

how does one determine the amount of EPA/DHA in grams? When the label states EPA200, that's 200 mgs. To get all of 3 grams would mean taking who knows how many pills? Or can the EPA and DHA be purchased and taken separately?>

I also use flax seed and eat a handful or two of nuts daily, and wonder what happens if one gets too MUCH of Omega3's? I use fish oil mostly for cardiovascular purposes/cholesterol reduction.

Hi there. Just another thought on fish oil -- I would really recommend that the fish oil supplement you're taking guarantees that there is no mercury or lead. The one I take specifically states this on the label, as well as there being no "PCB"s. I'm not absolutely certain, but I would think that might be the most dangerous element to taking too MUCH fish oil! If not, it would at least be very important. I'm doubling the recommended dose on all my Omegas right now but I'm doing it for a specific condition, not just a supplement for my multi.

Thank you so much for your input!

I think I'll re-check my supplement labels. The only thing I checked them for (on an advice from another poster) was for the country of origin. There's a way to contact the manufacturer, too (it's a well known company), with contact number on the label for inquiries, so I could just phone and ask regarding the PCBs and mercury content. How do they determine the absence/presence of mercury, anyway, test a random fish in a batch for mercury or what? Would be interesting to know!

Yes, knowing how they check WOULD be interesting to know! (And don't forget to ask about lead.) Don't know how they test but the bottle I have specifically states this on the label, that they warrant it's all "clean". Probably has something to do with from where they're deriving the oil.

It's really gotten crazy but we all DO have to be careful. It's pretty common knowledge at this point that fish high in omegas is "good" for you but it is NOT good if you're upping consumption and putting toxins in your body! I am very careful now about the fresh fish I buy and have resorted to only buying "wild" or "organically farmed". Even wild fish is no guarantee these days since waters have gotten more polluted. (That might be why you were advised to ask for the country of origin??)

No doubt it's hard to eat "safe" these days but we can't all drive ourselves crazy, just do the best we can and stay informed.

Hi, :)

I agree! The pollution of our lakes, rivers and oceans has gotten out of hand and is now out of control. Because everything in nature is recycled eventually, one wonders where and how it will all end. (toxic rain..air pollution, etc.) Thinking along these lines never fails to sadden me.

As you point out, we can only worry so much. Organic or wild fish SOUNDS safer to eat. Same with poultry, veggies, fruit and everything else. Too bad we have to pay $$$ for the privilege of consuming"natural" food. We have fish once a week or so. I rely on the supplements for my Omega 3's.

I was advised to check for the country of origin of all of my supplements to ensure none were made in China.

Very interesting reads. Are there any "well known" brands of Fish Oil w/o mercury/lead?

I'm out of of town so I can't check but I'm fairly sure the brand I've been taking most recently is Spectrum.
