Hi all! I am a 31yo female who will be having a tonsillectomy the first week of June. To say I am nervous would be a serious understatement. My 5yo son had the surgery a month ago and he suffered! Knowing that adults experience more pain, I must say, doesn't sit well with me. The same surgeon will be doing my surgery and he uses the Bovie knife technique. My question is...do any of you know what technique you had and if you think that had a direct impact on your recovery and pain?
Thanks so much and I hope everyone feels good!

Well, I had planned to get my tonsils removed back before Christmas and canceled the morning of the surgery...Far too many horror stories from this website caused me to say "I'll live with them". However, from what I've been told by my e,n,t doctor and my own research, the Coblation method has been cited to ease the pain and help the post surgery recovery experience. I'm sorry to report that I probably should have gone through with it as I have been through more throat problems and continued tonsil stone concerns. I tried to get some feedback from this website on those adults who have gone through with the surgery with doctors using this method of removal, but unfortunately didn't have too much luck in finding anyone who could thread back a reply. If anyone reads this and has gone through this procedure with Coblation, please feel free to provide some details about your recovery..I am at a point now where I may have to reschedule and bite the bullet... Coblation seems to be the newest method out there and not all doctors are practicing this method...it apparently removes the tonsils at a much lower temp and doesn't damage the surrounding tissue "as much" as those older techniques, including the hot temp laser and bovie...Still looking for some good feedback from those who have gone with the Coblation method...Good luck and don't do what I did..stay the course

My son four had the coablation method.. a friend's son 2 had the coablation method.. other than mild ear pain during descabbing.. regulated by chewable tylenol and ear drops. Nothing stoppped or phased them. I am afraid I am not familiar with the Bovie knife method. I would find someone that does the coablation method near you.
I had the same technique done by the same ENT at the age of 31.. as well as a sinus surgery as an added bonus. Pain was pretty bad.. but mine was aggrevated by thrush. It wasn't til the thrush kicked in and forced premature shedding of my scabs and bleeding that I had any unmanageable pain. My brother had the electrocausterization done and his recovery was longer and appeared to be more painful than mine.. he was 16 to my 31. My parents had the old hack and slash method done in their mid twenties.. it was the worse three weeks of their lives, but they felt it was worth it.
Sincerely,
MG

I had the scalpel and cautery method done this past March. I've read many posts here and on other message boards, and I don't think my recovery was any worse than those who had the coblation technique. I had absolutely no bleeding issues after surgery. The main thing is that your doctor is good, knows what he/she is doing, and has experience with whatever technique he/she may use. Good luck.
