I have been having a horrible time with this smothering sensation and shortness of breath. It got so bad I went to the ER. They think it might be acid reflux. Im not sure that is the problem completely and think anxiety is more of the culprit. Anyone have shortness of breath especially when lying down and feel like their throat is closing up? It is horrible and I cant find anything to help it.

i feel like this too. your not alone. i usually just try to stay calm. but i'm having shortness of breath right now. i don't like it one bit. i was recently diagnosed with hashmoto's thyroiditis. the right side of my thyroid is slightly larger than the left. i don't enjoy feeling this way. i am also experiencing some hair loss that isn't any fun either. ive been to numerous doctors and still no solution to what i am experiencing. just that i have an "inflammed thyroid". i am taking iodine tabs for it. i would suggest you go and get some blood work done to see how your thyroid levels are. at least you can slowly start ruling out things one at a time. goodluck

That is the cause of all my anxiety...if you post on the Acid Reflux board so many of us have that problem. It usually associated with LPR, it's a kind of reflux that goes up passed your esophagus and irritates the throat and vocal cords. Search LPR reflux and you will see if that sounds like you. I have anxiety as well and I think I have become so obsessed about this problem, it totally consumes me. Stress of course makes it worse since that produces more acid and also makes it hard to relax your throat.
Good Luck
