My daughter has a terrible problem w/meds, just given lexapro, lamictal & trazadone. Got horrible migraines & threw up like crazy, I think it's thelamictal from what I read plus itching. Had a suicide thought but thought it through which I think was the lexapro. What next?

I too, have had a terrible problem with meds. For me, Anti-depressants set me off, and give me very intense suicidal thoughts. That could be whats setting her off. Lexapro and Prozac in particular with the suicidal thoughts.

I am currently on Lamictal and I honestly love it. You were right, the itching is a side effect. I experience that one. However, make sure you are looking for a rash. If she gets a rash she needs to go to the doctor ASAP because that is very dangerous and can be very painful and have a very bad effect on her skin.

Another who has problems with meds.. Like Jess, Lexapro and Prozac worked against me not for me! I was on Lamictal but I got a rash so definitely watch out for that! I was told that it could take up to a year for a person with BiPolar to get the right medications...

It's more like alot of itching but the worst was the servere migraines & throwing up, we looked it up & it sd the lamictal can cause severe migraines.
She had been on Topamax at one time & loved it & also no weight gain but it isn't covered anymore & so expensive. This has been going on for alot of yrs.
Thanks for replying.

My daughter is on Lamictal and we were told by the nurse practitioner that IF she were to get a headache peppermint oil (for the aroma) and peppermint tea sometimes help. We never had the headaches but I thought I would pass on that information.

As far as the rash, it's rare and can be avoided by increasing the med slowly...IF she does get the rash tell her not to take another dose of the med until it is evaluated by a dermatologist and discussed with her pdoc. My daughter developed a few rashes which were not the Steven Johnson Syndrome rash that is the dangerous one. So don't get too concerned about the rash....Lamictal is a great med with the least side effects and when it works it is said to be the "magic bullet" by many.

Also, the side effects of meds often subside after a period of time so giving them at least a month before giving up on them is usually the rule of thumb.

I hope that things improve for your daughter and that she eventually finds the med that will help.

i think we finally found right med. for my son, he's 13. It's been trial and error......was horrible. He is on Abilify........and doing much better. Infact, went to doc the other day and it was upped from 5mg to 7.5mg. he is doing much better in school, and that was my main concern. he is also supposedly ADD, so he has been on Concerta, Strattera, Depakote, Zoloft, Trazadone. The Depakote made him go a bit out of control, he was admitted to a behavioral center for a few days. that's when everything was d/c'd, and was put on the Abilify. he's been on it for about 8 weeks and last nite was the first nite taking the 7.5. so i hope this is going to do it for him.

I am on tegretol....( just be cautious, you cant be out in the sun between 10-3pm.. if you take tegretol.... I feel good on tegretol( no headaches. and no cravings for sweets....like i had on Zyprexa) so I will stay with tegretol..

My daughter who is an adult is Bi-polar also.... and she took. Lamical.. and she had severe headaches and went off that med.....

Take omega 3 too. It may be just fish oil but it works!

I found a way to get free psych meds if your ability to pay is too tight! I too need meds that are very expensive and I'm currently not working and don't have insurance.

I went to my countys urgent care for psych patients, recieved prescriptions and then took them to an approved pharmacy where they are filled at no cost! This is not the most pleasant experience but not all that bad! It is so....worth it for you and your daughter to have the right medication.

Hope this helps....

Bye for now:blob_fire

I am on Lamictal and since I have been taking it, my weekly/biweekly migraines have almost disappeared. Sometimes it can be a preventative, though it can have nasty side-effects with some.
I had migraine and severe nausea with Topomax, had to drop it.

I HAVE BEEN ON LAMICTAL FOR A YEAR NOW AND IT HAS CONTROLED MY MOODS, IE LIKE ANGER, RAGE AND IRATIBILITY, BUT IT WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL THE DEPRSSION AND ANXIETY. I WAS ALSO DX WITH PTSD. I HAVE DONE THE GAMIT OF TRIAL AND ERROR WITH LOTS OF DRUGS LIKE THE NEW GENERATION ANTI PSHCHOTIC, THE OLD GERNATION ANTI PSHCYOTICS, AND SSRI. NEEDLESS TO SAY I HAVE HAD VARIOUS BAD REACTIONS, SOME PUT ME INTO MANIA, SOME MADE ME A ZOMBIE, SOME MADE ME MORE ANXIOUS, WHAT A MESS. RIGHT NOW I AM TAKING 150 MG LAMICTAL TWICE A DAY, .5 RISPIRIDAL IN THE PM , 1MG LEXAPRO IN THE AM , AND 1MG KLONIPIN PRN, THIS ONE IS USUALLY SPLIT IN HALF AND I TAKE IT ABOUT TWICE A DAY. I HAVE BEEN DOING PRETTY GOOD ON THIS COMBINATION, I JUST STARTED IT THREE WEEKS AGO, SO FAR NO ILL EFFECTS.

Hi Bills!! YOUR DAUGHTER NEED NOT SUFFER BECAUSE OF THE COST OF PRESCRIPTIONS!!! I had the same thing with my son needing a med that worked and was having a problem with insurance at the time. Just get a script from the doctor, notify the pharmaceutical company, and send it to them and your daughter will get whatever med she really needs. IT WORKS!! THEY'LL GIVE IT TO YOU FREE OF CHARGE!! It is horrible to watch your child day after day suffer with no end in sight. Tell your doctor right away and get that girl on the road to recovery. Hope this was helpful. Take care and God Bless--Hopeto--

We tried that & being that she has medicaid they consider that Insurance even though it doesn't cover it. Thanks

is there any way she could just add one med at a time? i would start with the lamictal.

that way, you could tell what med does what.

i ended up starting with lithium only. then, as my symptoms would appear, i would add the next thing. for me that was lexapro. and then i tried the anti-psychotics.

if that was in the thread, sorry. (i did not read the whole thing!)

best to you!
kathy

Hey Bill! We were on Medicaid, too and they still agreed to it because Medicaid would only permit certain meds and my son's doc would not agree to it, feeling that their choice of meds would do more harm than good for a 15 yr old. Be more persistent with your daughter's doctor and convince him to speak or send a fax to the pharm. company. Take care and God Bless! Hopeto--

What did you think of the lamictal? Also she has thyroid problems on meds for that & hormone problems might need hysterectomy.
