Hi all,
As i stated in a previous post,my consultant suggests there is an abnormality involving my right ear. About a 18onths ago when i was answering a telephone call at work i held the receiver to my right ear and the person sounded as if i was under water, almost like an echo but bubble like if you know what i mean. Ever since, when i talk, as i end a word it sounds as if something in my right ear is inflating/deflating, its really odd!Its only in my right ear, hence the abnormality.

Hi Maria,

I have the same thing off and on with my left ear, only I would describe the sound as more of a distortion or synthesized noise.

Regards, Brenden.

that is a spasm of the middle ear, it will react to your own voice....very irritating! look up middle ear myoclonus, stapedial myoclonus and tensor tympani syndrom.....

possible in both questions but usually resolves on its own. they believe mine was caused by a virus. mine was extreme, both ears so i had surgery.
what virus did you have prior to?

Hi Maria,

Just to say that when I first got ill with vestibular problems I had all sort of weird stuff going on in my ears - thymping, a sensation of a muscle (well I found out it was a muscle vibrating in there. I doubt that the problem your specialist is referring to is this one - he will be talking about the damage to your vestibular nerve brought about by either a virus or migraine. However when something goes wrong in that department I think it can send the whole ear out of whack. If you look up the stuff lib has mentioned it will tell you more about what's probably going on.

One of the things that helped me was to wear a night guard as all the stress of the dizzy issues was causing me to clench my teeth. Teeth clenching or any problem with the muscles around the jaw can have a knock on effect on the ears. A lot of people with tmjd (tempero mandibular joint disorder) have ear problems. If you do clench or grind you may be doing it more now when asleep (it's sometimes hard to know you are doing it) it might help to get a night guard.

As Lib says once your other issues have cleared up it could clear up on its own. Migraine can also cause some weird ear symptoms.

best,
