A friend of mine said I should investigate Progesterone Cream for assisting with bone density. Has anyone heard of this as an alternative to drugs?

There was an AP news item yesterday which stated that such claims are unfounded, and that progesterone cream can raise the risk of breast cancer and are tied to a slightly higher risk of ovarian cancer.

I think that progesterone creams that are not synthetic, such as Provera, are safe to use. This might be part of your bone health protocol but it alone is not the answer. For more information about progesterone cream - the kinds to use, how to use it, precautions, etc. you could read what Dr. Mercola or Dr. Lee have to say.

One should not assume that non-synthetic hormones are safe or safer than synthetic. I am glad that Pika B noted the AP article on the net from yesterday. I saw this too. You can find it by doing a news search on the net for progesterone. The article notes that claims regarding increased bone density are not supported by any studies. As Pika B noted, there is however increased risk of cancer.

As with everything, one should do their own research and make their own decision. Pharmacology studies and MD's opinions on alternative health care are usually suspect in my mind. And they are now exploring new drugs as a result of this study! Not my cup o' tea, but, thankfully, everyone can decide for themselves what is the best course for his or her body. I'm all for truth in advertising, though. Now if only the drug companies would clean up their act as well.
