I'm trying to quit but everytime I try I go back to smoking especially when I'm stressed and have a lot of thoughts on my mind, so I saw the nicotine inhaler and it seems like a good way to start again. I was wondering whether they are effective, because the reason I smoke a cigarette is that I can feel the stress release from my body as the smoke inhales, when I get light headed from the cigarette the stress and all my thoughts become non existent and 'exit' my body, will the nicotine inhaler have the same effect or does it just dose some nicotine in me without the effect of becoming light headed?

I'm not addicted to the nicotine as much, I'm more addicted to the smoke 'clearing' my brain of the stress and thoughts I have. Sorry if I'm not making myself clear here.... :dizzy:

Hi Gooner,

I love the inhaler! If you inhale fairly deeply on it, you can get light-headed. I'm also using the patch, but use the inhaler as a backup for rough times. It's almost like smoking a cigarette. I've quit for 18 days now. A friend of mine who quit with me is using the inhaler only and loves it. It's great because it gives you something to hold in your hand. I only use one cartridge a day, so it is pretty reasonable.

Best of luck!!!

Ok, so does it give the instant feeling of stress release??

Fibrana

Yes, I think it does Gooner. You'll have to try it. Only costs about $1/day if you only use one cartridge. If you are only using the inhaler, you can use up to around 12 cartridges a day. Good luck!

I have been using the inhaler for several years but used it only when I couldn't smoke like in a plane. In march I decided to use it like it should be used and yes I did use up to 16 a day. I did not miss smoking at all until my husband was rushed to the hospital with blood clots in both lungs I then needed the real cig and did smoke for several days until I thought this is so stupid since the inhaler was working fine. I stopped smoking and started the inhaler again. My doctor wanted me to try chantix a few months back but after reading about some of the side effects that I told my doctor about he agreed with me to not use a drug without a history and continue with the inhaler.it does work.

Good good. Does it just does nicotine into your body or other chemicals as well??

Fibrana

Just nicotine as far as I know. Why don't you do an internet search on it. I'm sure you'll find lots of information. I just use it and love it!

Hi Fibrana
If you love the inhaler so much are you a bit concerned about becoming addicted to that instead of cigarettes. I know it's safer but it isn't designed for long term use. I know a couple of people who have been chewing nicotine gum for years and years and can't get off it. In fact the drug companies are constantly inventing more and more delicious flavours. I wonder why:rolleyes:

I've just bought the nicotine inhaler, put one of those doses into the inhaler and am breathing off it from the thin end, but it's not working very well, I'm breathing deeply and I'm not getting a head rush or anything... am I doing something wrong?? I'm breathing from the thin end instead of the fat round end.

P.S. I get this tingling in the back of my throat and it makes me want to cough, I can't taste any menthol or anything (reviews said that it should taste nice)...

No it is not for long term use but if you want to use it instead of smoking for long term use I am sure it is better then smoking. Yes they did also change the flavor of the gum so one could chew it without getting sick. These are all different ways to stop smoking just like chantix but have been around much longer and we really do not know enough about chantix to try the unknown like what did that little pill do to your health a few years down the road. Remember fen Phen?

I know it is working when I take my first inhale I cough. I can also taste it in the back of my throat. The thing I love about it is that you are supposed to use it for 20 min but you can also put it down and do some house work or whatever and then start using it again.

I don't really taste any menthol either. You just get a nice "hit" or "tingling" that kind of feels like smoking. Make sure that both foil ends have been punctured. You can drag on it deeply or take small drags.

True Brit - - I know, I am worried about getting addicted to the inhaler, but I don't use it too often. Usually just after a meal. I'm also on the patch, so I don't want to overdo it. I mostly chew on the cinnamon sticks.

My dad quit smoking 10 years ago and chewed the nicotine gum for 10 years!!! About 20 pieces or more everday! He finally just chews normal gum now. It's still better than smoking I guess to use these aids, but I realize they shouldn't be used for long-term.

Good luck with the inhaler Gooner.

You're right Lorriem.
We don't know the effects of Chantix yet and I for one will NEVER take it again due to the horrific experience of getting off it and some of the side effects reported are really worrying. I imagine thousands of people will stay on HRT for life. This apparently makes them less likely to get Parkinsons disease or senile dementia due to stimulting the brain.:)

Just wish when I was 15 I didn't think it was so cool to smoke.I wouldn't be having this discussion.

What is the inhaler called & where did you get it? Also can you wear the patch & still do it? Thanks

lorriem

It is called the nicotrol inhaler and you need a script for it.I do not wear the patch with it but some do.I am not sure how safe that would be.

In Canada, it is called the Nicorette inhaler and you do not need a prescription. I got mine at Wal-Mart!

Hi Lorriem,

The cost here in Canada at Wal-Mart is about $25 for the starter kit which includes the inhaler and 30 cartridge refills. Then, you can just buy the refill cartridges. However, I've chewed up my inhaler so much, that I think I'll just buy the starter kit again and get a new inhaler!!! LOL

Tomorrow will be 3 weeks for me off cigarettes!!!!!!!!!!!!! :blob_fire

Hi Meemaw,

Thanks for the welcome.

I have been smoking for 35 yrs, average 10-15 cigarettes per day. This is my 5th major quit (and several minor attempts to stop smoking in between, lasting from few hours to few days!).

In the previous 4 major quits, I tried: cold turkey, acupuncture, NRT gums, Zyban/Welbutrin ... but failed (the longest quitting period I could manage was about 6 months). This time, I used the NRT inhaler:

- From the beginning, I used 2-3 cartridges per day. In addition, I used NRT lozenges (2 mg) when needed. I cut the lozenge into quarters, and used 1 small piece when the craving became unbearable (such as after meals).

- After 3 months, I stopped using the NRT lozenge (but still keep some in my handbag, just in case!), and cut down the use of NRT inhaler.

- I'm now into the 7th month of quitting. I still need one or two puffs from the inhaler when needed (yes, I still have moments of craving, but they are more and more manageable), especially when the pressure from work becomes too great to handle. One cartridge would last 2-3 days.

To me, the NRT inhaler is a good help for my quit. I'm confident that this will be my last quit!

Cheers,
nmc

Congrats NMC

sounds like you've got a handle on it this time!

I am only into my 4 day of quitting. I can't believe i've made it this far. I was a 2 pack a day smoker for 30 yrs. Recently i cut back to a pack a day but even that was hard.

You sound like me so hard! I finally found a Walgreens that has it so asked my Dr's office to call in a script. How many times do you have to get the refills & do you need a script each time? Also I bought licorace to chew on it is sup to take away the craving for nicotine. I hope I do as good as you!

billsgramp it comes with about 126 cartridges . My doctor gave me 6 refilles but I do not think I will be using all of them. I am down to 8 a day but remember that they do work for 20 min so if you do not have 20 min to use it you can always put it down and then use the same one again. I hope this helprd you.

Well I got it says 168 pieces on box if that's cartridges, Have to ck, no refills. I know I am going to have to be real careful w/the holder only has 1 that I see. I remember yrs ago I tried something similar & kept leaving the holder places or loosing it. Gonna start tommorrow.

Hi Billsgramp
You are right 168 cartridges. I looked all over the box yesterday and didn't see that so I counted them and then guessed on how many I had used.I looked again after I read your post and spotted it right away. Mine came with 4 extra mouth pieces but I have only used one of them.Mine also came with one holder for the cartridges and mouth piece. If you need an extra case or mouth piece the druggest might give you one from another box. That is what happened with my case when we had to travel last week I needed an extra case. It can't hurt to ask.Plus don't forget if you travel by plane have the druggest put the label on the plastic case.
Good luck

I'm wrong, jumped the gun, I saw a picture of one holder on the box but there are more inside & a carrier just like you said. Do you know if anyone has had any problems using the patch too? I thought w/that on you may not need the inhaler that much.

I never did and I seem to remember that one cartridge is = to 4-5 cig but i could be wrong.

I'm on the patch and also using the inhaler a few times a day. No problems. I believe the pamphlet that came with the inhaler said that one cartridge is equal to less than two very light cigarettes. My friend quit using just the inhaler and she seems to be doing better than me! She hardly even uses it anymore. I need all the help I can get still 24 days in!!! I even chew the gum once in awhile. All my friends are laughing at me saying I'm going to have a heart attack on all these replacements! Might as well smoke! LOL

Fibrana I tried the patch in the early 90's.I got up at 6am and finished all my cigs got ready for work even though I was really feeling sick from smoking so many cigarettes and put the patch on.About two hours after getting to work I was expecting a big client and all I could think about was smoking.I got in my car and went to the aupermarket to get my FIX.I even switched to an ultra thin menthol cig thiking I wouldn't like them and not smoke as much plus it was a low smoke cig.Guess what happened they smoked faster and I loved them.I was just so mad at my self and I am so ready now.
I ******d the inhaler = how many cigarettes and one site said 1-3

Hi

As I understand, each cartridge contains 10 mg nicotine, but when one uses it, the "effective" amount of nicotine one inhales from one catridge is 4 mg.

Cigarettes vary in strength: from 2 mg to 16 mg. So, it's difficult to have a direct comparision of the amount of nicotine, depending on the type of cigarettes you smokes.

However, one point to remember: when a quitter uses the NRT cartridge, she inhales only the pure nicotine. On the other hand, when one smokes cigarattes, beside nicotine, she also inhales 4,000 other toxic chemicals!

Cheers,
nmc

Hi everyone
I just thought I would update the board that I am almost 6 weeks smoke free.It feels so good not smelling like a cig. I still use the inhaler 5-6 x a day but that is OK and I do know now what my trigger points are when I need the inhaler and that is stress. I wish there was a pill to make life stress free. How is everyone else doing on the inhaler?

Each person needs to start his/her own thread to discuss their issues.

Thanks.
