Hi-
Couple of things I have not seen on this site. Ever since my neurological issues started last fall, I have a heightened reaction to alcohol. Not that I drink much, (once a month) so I forget to mention it to my Doc by the time I see him, but my numbness, burning, weakness and off-balance issues get a whole lot worse when I have a glass of wine.
Also, I was at the beach in SC last week when I felt a sensation like red ants were biting my legs. It only lasted for an hour, off and on, and I do not know if that goes along with my neuro issues or I was just getting bit by bugs I could not see on the beach.lol!
One more thing. One day last week I was taking a shower in normally warm water. My fingers and toes felt like the water was scalding- even though the other parts of my body knew it wasn't. It has not happened since but later on the same day, I had the same problem doing the dishes.
Thanks for the info!

 Wow you don't realize it but you have just put a major piece of a puzzle that was missing for me into place. I too have a very odd reaction to alcohol. I have never been a "drinker" but used to enjoy a cocktail every once in a while. About 10 yrs ago, when some of my symptoms first started happening, every time I had a drink of any size that had alcohol in it my feet and legs got extremely hot, almost like they were on fire and the skin felt like it was being stretched like it was swollen or something. It got to the point that I would have to soak them in ice water just to get relief. At times I would also get itchy like I had bug bites like you described along with the major increase in temperature, just in my feet and lower part of my legs. They don't feel hot to the touch, just inside. Like I said this has been happening for 10 yrs, unfortunately they just put the pieces together this February that I do indeed have MS. I've been on Rebif for 2 months now. I see my Neuro in two weeks and I am definitely going to mention this to him. It seems to coincidental for this not to be MS related. Thank you for your post and I hope my input was helpful, good luck to you

Just thought Id throw in my 2 cents. I too, have never been much of a drinker, but have noticed that one glass of wine now puts me under the table, and increases my already really bad balance issues. At my last doctors visit, I inquired about it (MS SPecialist) and he told me that more than half of his patients have told him the same thing within the first year or two of being dx. He wasnt sure if the Rebif I take (and have taken for 8 months) might be contributing to this, or if it is simply MS. I called the manufacturer of Rebif, who says that you shouldnt drink excessively on the drug; however one glass of wine or drink a week, shouldnt affect me. Well, it does, so it must be the MS!!
As for the heat sensitivity, first of all, almost all MSers have it..my dx came from my diziness in the shower and in the summer months; however I too, have noticed that at times, my heat sensitivity also includes feeling like I am scalding myself under water, which my husband holds his wrist under- to prove to me its not hot. Its gotten so bad that the other night I rinsed spahetti under cold water, (it felt hot to me!) and I served company cold pasta...nice, huh?
The bug bits I cant help you with, although SC does have biting ants...I wouldnt totally write yourself off as crazy yet! You might very well have been having some nerve tingling which felt like bites, or you might really have been getting bit..either way, nothing suprises me with this disease anymore! Tongiht, my husband was massaging my calfs, because they felt so tight, what felt good one minute had me screaming in pain the next..and he was barely touching me..go figure.
Good luck and keep us posted on the alcohol issues...thats interesting, Id like to hear what another Neuro has to say.

I too have a "problem" when i have a drink. I am not a big drinker...say once in every 1-2 mths, but as soon as i have a sip of vodka, my lips go numb then it spread up my face and i talk slurred.....i am not even slightly tipsy by this point! Then i am asked how many i have had! I figure if people think i am drunk anyway, they won't notice when i am! lol
But hey, i am stubborn and i refuse to stop the occasional partying.....i've got MS it ani't got me.....for now anyway!
Let us know what your neuro says as mine has just cancelled my appointment ...for the 4th time...and i don't get to see him till nov or whenever if he cancels again!
Take care:angel:

Couldn't believe the post when I read it!!
I have the same problem with alcohol
I am an occasional (1 a month or less) drinker.
I drink with friends during get togethers and whatnot and I have noticed the same increased sensitivity to the drinks.
Surprisingly I am not the only one to have noticed it though, my friends and hubby have noticed it as well.
I have actually more or less stopped drinking because of this and also because I react very differently to it than I ever did before.
I am not an overly emotional person and never cried in front of anyone except hubby.
Well, the last few times I had drinks I wept like a baby!!!!
I was horified the next morning because this is just so unlike me.
As for the ant biting problem?
It sounds like I am having the same thing but mine started last summer during a hot spell. My big toe was the only thing affected but it felt like a hornet (Ive been stung by one before...eeyowtch!!)was repeatedly stinging my toe.
That lasted a whole day.
2 weeks ago it started again in m fingertips, toes, sides of feet, face, hands and legs.
Most of the time it is just an awful nuisance but a couple times it actually brought tears to my eyes, the pain was that bad!
Also the water thing?
I have that as well but not as extreme as you, in my case I have it in really small areas of my hands and feet.
When I put my hands in water (even cold water at times) I have tiny spots that feel like I am being stabbed with a hot needle.
Hope to hear more from you after you talk to your neuro, think I will do the same as well.
Keep us posted!!

My next appointment is June 4th. I'll let everyone know what he says. I am not diagnosed, by the way, but am having lots of neurological issues. And doctor noteds say potential atypical MS. Atypical because I NEVER had symptoms prior to last fall and once I had them, they never went away.
