View Full Version : Am I training too much to have effective weight loss?

Ok i'm not very happy this week. I've just weighed myself and i've only lost 3 and 1/4 lbs for the week. My gripe is that i've trained EXTREMELY hard from Monday thru to Friday and i'm on a low carb 1500Kcal a day diet AND i'm 6'3 and have 100lbs to lose. So with that combination how is it possible that i can only lose 3 1/4lbs for a week?
I've been dieting since Novemeber and have lost 70lbs via hard training and lots of concentration but lately my losses per week have been really poor ranging from 1/2lb-4lbs a week which for someone of my Height, Size and Weight is really bad. I was wondering what can i do to kick start the weight loss again?

Don't confuse me with a fad dieter or a 'quick fixer' because i'm not and i do realise that if you don't have so much to lose it is actually a GOOD thing to be losing between 1/2lb-4lbs a week BUT like i said i'm 100lbs away from my goal so i believe i'm intitled to somewhat better results.

I Run for 20 minutes every morning, train for 100minutes in early evening time with cross training that includes running, sit ups, weights (ankle and barbells) then i do another 20-30 minute run at night. Could any of this be a hinderance? or what could i do to help myself with the losses?

I've heard people mention that muscle weighs more then fat but my ponderance is how quickly do these muscles develop? i'm sure they aren't instantaneous so if anyone could enlighten me on this point also please do

Another issue i'm concerned with is this 'starvation mode' how long does it take the body to go into this mode i'm sure it's not some constantly changing thing surely the body must take a few days to realise that you are not supplying it with enough and thus the calorie retention starts?

I was a former martial artist who competed to national level and whilst i had an excellent physique then i didn't know much about nutrition and only 'ate right' when prepping for a bout but i always over indulged and those habits carried on even when i stopped training hence this mega gain i incoperate alot of my previous exercise into what i do now, obviously not for the same duration but i go at it as hard as i can for as long as i can is this a bad thing to be doing whilst trying to lose weight?

I'm aware that i should use lighter weights and do more reps to not gain weight and that's what i have been doing. AM i wrong in thinking this?

Basically this past 5 weeks has become increasingly frustrating because my fitness levels have improved quite alot and i am training alot more to counter act this so i always feel the 'burn' per session but since i've been training harder the losses have gotten worse and worse can anyone explain what is happening there?

I will greatly appreciate any replies to my long and jumbled post. I am, as i said, very frustrated right now and need advice that can help me improve those losses again so if any of you have been or are in the same boat as me pleaser reply.

weight loss takes time... anything over 6lbs a week is pretty unhealthy. just be patient

I realize that you are frustrated with your rate of weight loss but you really shouldn't be. You cannot say that you are "entitled" to lose more than 4 lbs/ week. If you are dieting, doing enough cardio and weight training then it's about all you can do at this point and the amount of weight loss is just what your body can do right now. Don't push it, don't rush. Remember that in weight loss, "slow and steady" wins the game.

You shouldn't be using lighter weights, although you can't build really build much muscle while on a low cal diet you can conserve or even build a little by lifting heavy.

Remember each pound of muscle burns 50 cals so:
more muscle = higher base metabolic rate

Take it from someone who's lost 120 lbs. The closer you get your goal the harder it will be to loose weight.

It took me about 1 1/2 years to loose it with a diet and exercise. Below is my progression chart.

Month 1, 25 lbs
Month 2-5, 40 lbs
Month 6-12, 35 lbs
Month 12-18, 20 lbs

Total = 120 lbs

In the past year since I lost the weight I've only lost 5 lbs despite my routine been more intense then ever.

Look just keep up the good work. Your going to have weeks when you slack off and you loose 6 or 7 lbs and your going to have weeks when you work you butt of and and only loose 2 lbs. Just take it one day at time and don't let the the magnitude of your goal get too you.

You know I took a look at your calorie intake. 1500 is rather low despite the fact that your trying to loose an aditional 100 lbs.

Starvation mode is deffinately a possibility. My advice. Slowly increase that to 1900 calories for a couple fo weeks and then drop it back down to 1500 calories. That will get you out of that starvation mode. Make sure to space your meals evenly 4 to 6 small meals a day. That also tricks your body making think it ate more than it really did and makes your metabolism work harder.

Also mix up your work out. Do different things at different hours. What happens with your body is that if you do the same exercise at the same time everyday your body starts burning less calories everytime. My mixing up your workout it keeps your body off balance and requires it to burn the maximum amount of calories per workout.

However, keep in mind the closer you get your goal you will start loosing less and less weight so don't get discourage.

I have lost 58 pounds and it has taken me 1 1/2 years at this point - I average loosing 2-3 pounds a month at this point, but I rejoice over every little oz I loose. Try measuring yourself every few weeks for extra incentive. I have about 22 more pounds to go, I understand your frustration. I recently added weight lifting to my routine, and that has slowed my loss, but the inches are what I am looking at now. Good luck

Hey all,

Thank you for the replies. It's great to hear other peoples stories and also getting advice on things i can do to optimise my weeks i very beneficial :)

I can definitely relate to what hihwhatisup posted in relation to some weeks when you train your butt off you lose a little amount but then when you have a slacker week you somtimes lose 6 or 7lbs - i find that reallly odd and a little frustrating i must admit.

I have to say tho that lately my physique has begun to change quite a bit and i think that when i get to the last 50lbs or so to lose i will be more content to watch it come off gradually, right now being 100lbs away from goal does make me want to speed up this entire process but my bodies forcing me to learn patience because that weight aint shifting at the rate i'd like lol.

I really hope i'm not in starvation mode :/ Since the beginning of this week i have switched around my eating habits to incoperate 4 or 5 meals a day and I do seem to be constantly hungry - am i right in thinking my body is like a mini furnace and is burning up the food 'on entry' so to speak? I've heard that when you are in starvation mode that you no longer have hunger pangs because your body learns to sustain itself under duress - so am i right in thinking if i am hungry between meals my body can't be in starvation mode?

The point about mixing up training and making sure the body can't get itself used to or complacent is an interesting one. I thought that as long as i up my intensity per session when i feel a workout is to easy for me that i was actually knocking my body off balance? As in it hasn't experience me push for this extra minute(s) before so as such it can't be complacent - am i wrong with this thinking?

I do have a kind of plan of what training i will be doing when i reach certain weight targets and to be honest if i attempt them to soon i will cause myself injury and stress on my joints - i've got another say 28lbs to go before i can put my other workout plans into action so right now i do feel like i am in some kind of limbo. What variant of the exercise i am doing now would you recommend hihwhatisup?

I am definitely aware that as i get closer to my final goal weight loss slows to a relative snails pace but surely with 100lbs left to lose this shouldn't be happening for a while yet?

Seriously and realistically what should a guy of 6'3 and 309.5lbs, on a 1200-1500 calorie diet who is involved in very high intensity workouts be looking to lose from week to week? Surely my average weight loss per week shouldn;t be comparable with that say of a person who was 5'5 and had probably 25lbs to lose? i thought my average weight loss per week should average around the 4lb mark not the 2lb because of my height and weight..am i wrong with that?
