If anyone is taking this what mg are you on? My daughter was told to take 250 am & 250PM & threw up last night. Just would like to see what others take since she goes to a clinic & care not too good.

Nausea is a very common side effect when first beginning any of these meds that affect the temporal lobe. A common starter dose is 100-200mg two times a day and you can take all the way up to 1200 mg per day. The side effects can make you feel unsteady, dizzy, even like you're really drunk. Sometimes this can take weeks to go away...and then whenever the dosage is increased, you usually feel it again, but for a shorter time.

Is your daughter taking any other meds? In the U.S., Tegretol is not usually given by itself for bipolar disorder. It works ok, but certainly isn't the best mood stabilizer out there. It is usually prescribed when other mood stabilizers have not worked, or it is used as an add-on. My son takes it in combination with lithium and Lamictal.

How long has your daughter been taking it?

She's taking her thyroid med also. She tried the lamictal but gave her terrible migraines & throwing up. She was on tegratol when she was young in NY. She's been on everything you can imagine thru the yrs. She likes another one says it works good forget the name right now starts w/a T & is for migraines & you don't put on weight but medicaid doesn't cover it anymore. thanks

I take tegretol and I hate the nausea to no end. I took it for a couple of weeks wanting to barf all the time, then I called an complained to my psychiatrist. It is good to complain a lot and I cut back again. Then slowly added somemore to my regiment, barf city was back. I am going to complain more because there are other meds that I can take.

I had a student in my class be absent all the time, and I never knew why. He also took tegretol. Now I know. It also makes me shake like a dog shitting a peach seed.

I'm on Tegretol and it took me a good 2-3 weeks to get myself together, I almost lost my job! We are working on slowly pushing up my milligrams. I'm taking 400mgs at night and 400mgs in the morning. I'm also taking Lithium, Trazadone and Xanax.

My pdoc told me that this was going to be hard but to tell you the truth I didn't think it was going to be that hard! Anyways, I pushed through it and I have to say it works really well...

What does the tegretol help with. Ive just started a meagre 100 mg a night plus 60 mg prozac. What benefits does the tegretol have. All I hear is bad things.

Hi, I started on 100mg am and 100mg pm... now up to 200mg am and 600mg pm (time release form)... never had sickness with tegretol - only side effect was dizziness for few days each time dosage was increased. If the nausea doesn't ease ask your pdoc about the time release form of Tegretol - Tegretol Retard.

PS - NOW on this dosage it's working a dream for me,

Good Luck,
Nut.

Hasn't happened yet, I have a HMO and must wait for a long time for an appointment. He may be in a pissy mood too and screw with me but I am on to him. I have found my psychiatrst is more empthetic during the morning than his late afternoon appointments. So I will go in the wee early morning and see what happens.

Call your doctor and complain for your daughter, unless she is an epileptic she can use other drugs to help her. Unless she is no longer small but a big child then the game is different again.

Each medicine is different for each person. If someone has had bad experiences with Tegretol it doesn't mean everyone will have that bad experience. The same is true for good experiences.

Before my last increase on tegretol, my pdoc talked about switching me to Seroquel (Quetiapine) -it is fairly benign for side effects.
