View Full Version : Anemia Causing Swelling?

Well - I have had some setbacks and am likely headed for another blood transfusion. In my case - uncontrolled menstrual bleeding is what is driving me there (even on high BCP dosages and Provera I have started some actual hemmoraging over the last few days) and while I will likely be getting ablation to stop this in the next week or two, I have noticed that while I have been losing the most blood that my face ankles and feet are swelling badly and not going back down. The dr today said this was because I was becoming severely anemic again (guessing my HGB was dipping to 8 again - more bloodwork done today) - is this typical - when you are getting at your worst with your anemia do you notice this swelling?

Thanks much for the input....

Hi,
Last year about this time I was way low Iron, Hgb and Creat. I had alot of extra swelling. I wear 20-30mm graduated compression below knee due to circulation problems and still my feet and legs were swelling. The increase I had may of been due to combo of health problems.
They went ahead with Blood tansfusions, took 4 units. Course to help get rid of extra fuild they gave IV Lasix while getting blood. And to top off that night they gave me a prep for endocopy and colonscopy too. They wanted to make sure I didn't have active bleed since I'm also on blood thinners.
I definatly left the hospital a few pounds lighter.
Later,
Mike
