I have osteo arthritis and due to the pain in my neck, legs, and arms, I have been having trouble falling asleep, or I'd wake up in the middle of the night not being able to fall asleep. So, for the last couple years I have been taking Benedryl 50mg each night to fall and stay asleep.

Recently, I have been studing herbs and vitamins and have found a GREAT response to Velarian Root and Melatonine. Each night, I take two Valerian
Root and one Melatonine tablet. Along with this, I don't get the headachs that are associated with rebound after the benedryl.

Needless to say, I will continue taking this combination and have made it my goal to tell everyone about this miracle combination...

Let me know what you take for sleep...or Osteo if you have that info as well..

I currently take Vit. C, E, and D.

You might look into Ezorb for Osteo and joint/muscle pain as well.

2 Pantothenic Acid (B-5) before bed helped me in the past when I had trouble sleeping.

I take 3 mg of Melatonine as well. It is a combo 3mg Melatonine/25mg Theanine. I take that along with Valerian root...I sleep like a baby, but I can also wake up when the baby cries or in the morning and have no rebound headaches....I wish someone would have told me about this stuff years ago!!!

meblonde,

Was your insomnia brought on by the use of prescription drugs? Is melatonine a completely natural product? Do you think it would be safe to use with prescription drugs? I already know from this posting that it works well.
Thanks!

I was on prescription drugs (muscle relaxers, pain killers, prednisone, etc...). I didn't feel that the medication was really doing anything, so I stopped taking it after 2 years of no results. I have now been off of all scripts for about 3 years and am now just coping with the pain, spasms, etc. as they come...usually I just pray it goes away, but I really started thinking that they were trying to "cure" an incurable disease. I was on all scripts during 2 of my pregnancies. I gained 105 pounds with my oldest son (on prednisone only) and 75 pounds with my daughter(on everything).

Anyways...flare ups are often, but I have kind of incorperated it into my life...I work sitting down at a computer, so my fingers and neck bother me the most...

Has anyone noticed that their sight has gotten worse since arthritis??? I have gone through 2 glasses prescriptions in 2 years...and my sight is 10 times worse then it was with my first pair...I feel like I'm falling apart...and am wondering if yet again I have been misdiagnosed...lol

When I first started having problems, I was told I had Torticollis in my neck..not arthritis..lol...

Jasmine,

Thanks for your post. Hang in there! I am glad you are managing without the drugs. Unfortunately, most medicines have side effects so that while one problem may be lessened or eliminated with their use, a few others are created. Weight gain is a fairly common side effect, one we certainly don't need.
Sorry about your pain and spasms. Your type of work seems to be a contributing factor. Is the pain something you ever get used to? Having small children means leading an active life. I know that living with pain can deplete your energy levels and make it pretty frustrating to get through the days.

I,too, just had new glasses made. My eyesight has worsened somewhat; this in part because I have high blood pressure, also as a side effect of two of my medications. You just can't win. I don't know if there's a link between arthritis and vision problems. Have you tried acupuncture? It's supposed to help with a number of conditions, including neuropathy.
Good luck!

I have not tried acupuncter. My brother in law is a chiropractor and acupuncturist...but last time I had a chiro adjustment, I was left with a migrain for days...

I agree...can't win for loosing...I cannot say that you ever "get used" to the pain...I would say I have learned not to complain about it to often :) . That way if I am not constantly telling my husband that something hurts...than when I do say something he knows I mean it and I'm in a lot of pain...

If it gets too bad I still result to Ibuprofen...I use a combo of Ibuprofen oral, aspircream, and heat therapy...helps some...also I can take a Valerian root...which is used to stimulate relaxation...

I would say that yes, my job does contribute to the majority of my neck pain. But with arthritis, I don't think there is a job out there (other than in a sleep study...lol) that will not have a contributing factor to the pain.

The steroids did make me gain a lot of weight. I started taking them when I was pregnant with my first son and gained 105 pounds with him...gained 75 with my daughter...and miraculously only gained 40 with my son that I did not take anything with....

Also I forgot to mention that I have tried topomax and other Arthritis drugs in the past, to no avail...I'm just tired of being a human lab rat...

I refuse to see another dr. for this issue until I see something blink on the TV screen that they have actually found a cure...I am not looking for something to mask symptoms.

Thanks for your post.

I wish I could help. You are too young to be afflicted with this painful condition. Hopefully, there are some promising clinical trials being conducted in this area and new treatment options being developed!

You said you had tried, unsuccessfully, most of the drugs used to treat arthritis. That means you know all about the side-effects Rx drugs can cause. I am on several medications with no tolerance for any of them. I know what you had to go through trying them all. Right now you feel you've exhausted all your treatment options. Have you tried talking to fellow sufferers? You might find some comfort in that!

I hope Valerian tea helps you sleep! I also hope you sleep soundly with no pain! Is there a herbal tea that's designed to strengthen the body's healing powers and help us restore the sense of well being? I wonder who'd know, an alternative medicine person? I guess these naturopaths (???) do not give out advice without an appointment? ($$) I would be interested in trying something new. I have tried ginger tea for my nausea. It seems to work and does not taste bad at all.

Take care, :)
