View Full Version : 6.5 month old doesn't want cereal or veggies

We began feeding our 6 month old cereal at just over 5 months and veggies a couple weeks later. In the beginning he ate okay but now rarely wants to eat. He might take a couple small bites before refusing to eat more. He gets upset as soon as he sees his bib and he cries when he goes in his highchair. If you give him a bottle he's happy. I don't know what to do. The doctor wants him to be eating 1/2 cup of cereal per day and at least 1 jar veggies per day. We have not given him fruit yet per the doctors instructions. Any suggestions?

I don't really have any GOOD suggestions. My DD is likíng veggies less and less (she is the same age as your son). I have been hiding her veggies in fruit. I know it's a bad idea, but she won't eat them. She doesn't eat a jar a day either...even with the fruit. Mine has always been difficult to feed. It's like pulling teeth with her. She doesn't even want the bottle!

I am going to try putting fruit in his cereal. The other thing that is strange is that he loved his sippy cup in the beginning. It was like a new toy. Now he has no interest in that either.

Picky eating can be a sign of allergies.

My son had a lot of food he would eat then refuse after about the second of third time. Allergies.

If you or you husband have allergies.. environmental.. food allergies are just as possible. A baby isn't going to want to eat anything that makes their throat itch or body feel bad. This is a natural response.

Six months is too young for allergy testing, but you can give benedryl and see if it helps things.

We have the wonderful: Nut, Banana, Strawberries, Mushrooms, Wheat, Iodine (Sea Food), coconut, yeast.. and I can not think of some of the others right now. Go slow introducing real food. Some babies are texturally sensitive as well. My son went from milk to the occasional fruit puree to very small pieces of well cooked food. He hated goo and slimy things.. it is his father version 2.0.

Needless to say it takes time for their body to make the transition from a liquid diet to a solid one... take your time and keep a food log. This food was introduced on ____. Reaction Favorable.. etc.

Best of luck with the greatest life experiment.. raising kids.
Sincerely,
MG

hi tinkerbelle
my son is 9 months now and still not eating solids..( even sweet stuff like juice and fruits )
he refuse to eat solids , i tried all kind of tricks but still he hates solid food..I am breastfeeding so I did not worry , he sleeps the whole night since he was 6 weeks and he is gaining weight ( he is 24 pounds now )
now i am trying to give him our food and he loves it but he will not eat if we are sitting eating ...he still not eating enough solid food but he is starting liking it ( only our food if I cook something for him( baby food ) he will not eat it.
so just take it easy and give your son another a month or so.
best of luck !

Delaying solids isn't a terrible thing. I think we need to give babies some credit in knowing when they're ready. I think backing off a bit on the solids won't hurt a bit. As long as they're getting what they need from formula or breast milk and not losing weight, they'll be fine.
