Hi, I would like to know if any of you can give me some names of ms specialists in the NY/NJ area (ones that you highly recommend only please)
I live in NJ essex county. And would you please let me know if "this" doctor is the one that diagnosed you?
Thanks!

H 3 love,
Unfortunately I DO NOT THINK we are allowed to post doctors names according to the board rules. This is a shame in this case because I live within 30 minutes of you. I think it is okay to suggest this though, there is a well known MS clinic at Robert Wood Johnson in New Brunswick. You should look into it.
You asked if this person is the person who diagnosed me. Yes, and no. I was lucky to find a Neuro in my neighborhood who really did dx me first, however, I called upon an MS SPecialist to confirm dx and make sure nothing was missed. The MS Specialist confirmed everything my Neuro did, tests, diagnosis, even agreed with course of treatment (Rebif). I felt very glad to have a second opinion and now see the MS specialist every 6 months, and my Neuro alittle more regularly.
If you can get permission to give out names, Ill be happy to give you his...but honestly, I DO NOT want to get in trouble posting on this board. I need this board like a lifeline and post on it almost daily.
Moderator, if you see this, I am trying to find in the rules if it is allowed, if it is, please let us know. IF not, respectfully I hope I havent violated any rules just naming a reputable clinic in the area. Im doing my best to abide by all rules of this board.
Respectfully.
Nikki

Hey Nikki,
I'm sorry, I did not realize that we might not be allowed to post doc's names here. I'm new to this:eek: But I thank you for your reply:) I just wanted a doctor that knows his "stuff", after the appointment I had with a so called "specialist", I told him all the symptoms i'm having and he said get this..."you might have carpel tunnel" umm isn't that only in your hands and wrist? What a waste of time and money! So you see, I just would like to see a specialist that can really figure what is going on with me.
Again, sorry my intention was not to get anybody in "trouble".
Take care,

It IS okay, according to the "How to share information" link in the FAQ. It says that stating a doctor's name with city and state is okay as long as you don't post contact information. :)

HI there. Hey, you know what, Bearygood was right. Thank you Bearygood!! IT actually says "Naming a book title and author, or a doctor's name w/city/state is OK, just do not post any off-board contact information; again, on-board sharing only." SO, with that, Im going to tell you to give Dr. Suhayl S. Dhib-Jalbut (known as Dr. Jalbut) a call at RWJ New Brunswick. He is the director and Chairman of Neurology there. Youll find him in the directory.
But I also want to tell you, ruling out Carpal Tunnel isnt crazy. I too, was asked about it at the emergency room and had to have an EMG to rule it out! I was a fulltime student and administrative assistant at the time my fingers went numb. They first ruled out a pinched nerve, then carpal tunnel then eventually my neuro started MRIs, spinal Taps etc to rule out Lyme, infections and viruses. SO dont be too quick to judge the doc you saw as crazy.....MS is all about ruling out what else is COULD be..there is no actual test to test for MS.
Anyway, good luck. Keep us posted. By the way, the Neuro I see is absolteuly as good as the MS specialist as dx and followup. He is in Hunterdon County - name is Dr. Viradia. Much easier to get an appt with if you are in real need.
Hugs

Hey nikki, umm I should have explained a little more in detail of my appointment so that you can better understand the picture..... I told him that I had buzzing in my feet, parts of my body feeling hot, brain fog, tingling and a "numb like" feeling on my face, left ear crackling to loud noises along with a high pitched sound in my head (notice this on when quite only) toes, hands feeling numb, muscle spasms, etc. And that is when he said...."you might have carpel tunnel" oh and " are you stressed?". So you see, I don't think that I jumped to any conclusions, I did not go in there and say that ONLY my hands felt numb. I have other stuff going on too.
P.S Thank you for the names. How far is your drive to your specialist?
Be well:wave:

The drive is about 45 minutes to the specialist, 14 minutes to the regualar Neruo. Id drive across the world for my specialist...its that worth it to me.
I hope you get some answers soon. I really think you need to see a good MS doc, you should get answers quicker and they will be reliable.
Good luck.

3love, I'm in NYC but I'm not yet sure enough about my MS specialist to offer an endorsement. A great place for an additional recommendation might be your regular doctor -- they should be aware of what's going on anyway! My internist was really helpful in getting me on the right track by getting me to a neuro-ophthalmologist I really like. Good luck!

Everyone's always talking about MS Specialists here--I'd be happy with a plain old neurologist (I live in the boonies). But my family doc is ok. His wife has MS so he knows a LOT and gets me on the right meds. I got an MRI last year through a program the MSAA has, but had no really useful discussion of it with the doc -- we basically reviewed the report that was made at the MRI place... I got to look at the images, though -- meaningless to me, of course -- what does a lesion LOOK like?? My lazy eye was very evident so I knew it was me!
There are times I think I should leave my fiance and move the 150 miles away to Des Moines where I think they have an MS Clinic.... But, then I think that's kind of a silly thing to consider when I have no other support to speak of and how could I pay the doctor let alone pay rent and buy groceries!

HI 3love...
Yup, Dr. Jalbut is the one Id drive across the world for...he is tough to get an appt with, so if you are interested, either have another doctor make the call for you, or call him now....however, YES he is the best. Dr Jalbut is constantly in MS magazines and is currently doing some pretty neat studies on MS and Estrogen as well as MS and Epidemiology. He is given Federal Grant money quarterly to maintain his studies and he is the chairman of Neurology at one of NJ leading hospitals, he is also the Director of the MS Clinic at same hopsital.
He did dx me; however, a regular neuro saw me first and was 99% sure of what he was looking at.
KEEP IN MIND< THE NEURO STUDIED UNDER DR, JALBUT AND HAD JUST COMPLETED HIS FELLOWSHIP WITH DR, JALBUT IN MS.
Dr. Jalbut ordered no additional tests, felt that the first dr. did everything necessary, but concurred with both dx and recommendation for drugs (Rebif). I still feel that Dr. Jalbut gave me much more information, time and compassion. I still see him every 6 month (once you get in the first time, you dont have a problem making an appt for 6 months later) and he has a wonderful MS certified nurse who ALWAYS calls me back within an hour, if I leave her a message asking a question. I think I like her as much as him! Shes very qualified..she is a nurse practioner, but also certified in MS.
I wish there was more I could say...remember, MS is not ruled out by tests, other things which mimic MS are ruled out by testing...which leaves little doubt in the end...its just the end is a long time coming for some people. Dr. Jalbut had me dx in less than a week...keep me posted.

Thats so sad girfriend. You should never feel like you need anyone to keep you in food and roof. There is always help available if you need it. However, assuming you didnt really mean that, and you really are IN LOVE with him:
Even being in the 'boonies" as you said, its really REALLY important to see a good MS doc, even if it is once a year. You should ask your finace to take a long drive with you and make an appt to see that one who is 150 miles away. Family docs are wonderful for answering questions and even helping you thru minor relapses...but MS specialists know so much more about studies, tests, up and coming things as well as recent changes.....having one, just to see yearly, for a checkup, might make the difference in the quality of your life down the road...

What is it? The water in NJ?? More and more people are posting to this board from my neck of the woods. I am a patient of Jalbuts, and do love him too.
However, to Stoltz 814, I grew up in Philly and have seen Dr. Markowitz at Penn...is that the doc you are referring to?? And, if not, can you please tell us whom you are speaking of?? Im always on the lookout for another doc in the area who comes recommended....(In between Philly and NJ, I spent a year in Allentown, too! Alot of people really like the St.Lukes group up there...)
Anyway, sorry to hear you have Carpal, Laurasari, but GOOD NEWS for you that it isnt MS!!!
