I'm kinda new here, I've only responded to a few posts in the past, and I've never started a thread. But we got the results from my DH's SA. Let me give a little background info. My DH is 40, has Type 1 diabetes, and as a result has retrograde ejaculation...it doesn't come out in the normal fashion, everything empties into his bladder. So he had to be put on a prescription of Imiprimine (sp?) and Sudafed for 20 days, to help the muscle function properly. He was able to produce a sample:) , and these were the results:
His sample was about half the normal amount, so the count was 60 million. He had 3% with fast motility, and 27% with medium motility, totaling 30%, and they usually like to see a 50% total. I don't know about morphology:confused:
I'm looking at this as good news, because 20 years ago my DH was unofficially told he was sterile (no actual testing, just an educated guess because of diabetes). Just thought I'd lay this out on the table and see what you ladies think. All honest opinions appreciated!

Thanks Mapia:)
I really appreciate it. It means a lot to hear from you, since I know you have male IF also. This is just the beginning step, so now that I have some real news, I figured I'd look for some feedback, to get me going on this journey! I will definately keep posting. I love the support I see from so many wonderful ladies!

Hi Christin - I can't give you much specific feedback on DH's SA, but I did want to say that the numbers appear to have promise. I think you and DH should be very hopeful. I will be keeping my fingers crossed and be praying that you are able to get a BFP very soon!

Hi Kari,
Thanks for you response too! :) I hope we all get our BFP's soon too! We still have more stuff to get in order, tests and samples, so hopefully in a couple of months we can officially get on our way. But now that we know there's actually sperm, we can practice on our own, right:p

Hi Christin - sounds like you are on your way! I don't have much background with male IF issues, but if it doesn't work naturally, you'll have an abundance for IUI or IVF. With ICSI it only takes one! :) Good luck!

While you are in the "practicing" on your own phase. My RE at first appt. recommended one 81 mg aspirin a day for me. This is intended to improve the 'stick' factor for implanation. Careful though these act as a blood thinner. So, evaluate carefully if this is right for you. Best of luck to you both hope you'll be BFP very soon.

Hi Christin,
I know a little about SA and this is how it was for my DH. His count was fine which I also think your DH's numbers are not bad at all. As for motility my DH ranged at about I think it was about 48% at it was considered on the low side as they want it above 50% if I recall correctly. As for morhphology, my DH range in the 20% which was even more abnormal. I don't want to discourage you but I would recommend you have RE explain to you what is the average percentage they look for on motility and morphology so you have an idea of where you DH fits in on the average. Motility and morphology are just as important as count. The good news is that for men the issue of morphology and motility and even in some instances the count, can be improved with vitamins such as Fertility Blends for men. My husband is on it and it is supposed to improve men's sperm in all the areas noted above. You can get it at most vitamin stores, but you may want to discuss with your RE first. Furthermore, even if your DH motility and/or morphology is not great even after taking vitamins all these problems can be resolved with IVF/ICSI. So that is the good news no matter what something can be done to improve you and DH's chances. I hope that helps good luck!!!
With regard to the aspirin once a day just be sure you discuss with RE b/c their are certian times in your cycle that you should and should NOT take it. Taking it at the wrong time can cause miscarriage if you are pregnant and taking it. So just be sure you ask you RE if he thinks you need it and if so when you should take and when you should stop each cycle.

Thanks Viktorria, Yigo, Kathy, and Amy,
Kathy: My DH is going to the office to pick up lab requests tomorrow, and I'm going to ask him to get a copy of the report, so I can check on the morphology #'s. I appreciate you posting your DH's #'s to reference against. I am cautiously optimistic, but pleased that he has his own sperm. I was previously under the assumption that if sperm were found, there would be very few and IVF w/ICSI was going to be our only option, so I am still prepared to go that route. I never thought IUI would be an option, but our RE told me it could be, if his sample thaws well. That will be tested after lab results check out clear.
As for the aspirin, I will wait for further instruction from my RE before I proceed on my own. I am currently taking a vitamin cocktail my OBGYN recommended to better prepare me, and am also waiting for a vaccine to clear out of my system, so we won't be completely ready to go until the end of June anyway.
I hope in the mean time I get to watch the rest of the board fire up with everyone's BFP's.:blob_fire :blob_fire
Thanks again:p

Hi Christin,
I agree with deluka- you should ask your RE to explain all the numbers. My RE recommended we do a 2nd SA to look at morphology as in the 1st one (done a couple of months back) his motility came 42 (normal is 50) .So RE said she wants to look at morphology as that is also very imp. So you might want to ask your RE if she needs that done in your case.
cheers,
bluewhite.

Hi Christin! My DH also had a problem with low motility and morphology. He has been taking L-Carnitine and Emergen-C daily and his counts have been tremendously improved the past 2 cycles! I believe his motility was 49% this past cycle and I'm not sure what his morphology was. So it sounds like your DH'S counts are very promising!
