I have gained about 30 pounds during the school year! AHH! And this summer I want to take charge. So I was always curious, what is considered cardio? Could you guys give me about 5-10 examples or whatever you can? Thanks! Much appreciated.

- Walking/jogging/running
- Treadmill walking/jogging/running
- Stationary bike
- Eliptical trainer
- Jump rope
- Swimming (laps)
Basically anything that gets your heart rate going and rises your body heat. You should be doing from 15-45 min of cardio depending on your endurance, stamina, goals, and physical shape. Make sure you are drinking lots and lots of water if you plan on making cardio a big part of your training. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/round.gif Good luck!

Rice, have you lost weight on that? And do any of you think buying a treadmill is a good investment?

How about riding a bicycle? Is that less of a cardio workout than others because it's easier than running etc?

actually i have, but thighs are really starting to tone up a bit. i cannot use a treadmill as that is too much stress on my knee( two knee surgeries). and it really hurts and swells afterwards, this does not happen after riding. we all know that those of us women forty-something need our cardio and strength training to build bone. i feel great after riding and the high intensity does not even hurt my knee.

oops, sorry i forgot to answer your question.
you should invest in the treadmill if that will be your mainstay. buy one that can adjust(uphill) that is really good, wish i could do that!! tried it one time and could not go for 5 mins http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif also while going through PT, they made me walk backwards, i guess i could have continued doing that, but that was boring and non productive for me... and pain... hope that helps http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I find that no matter what kind of cardio I do, always seems that running outside is best. Not only do you burn more calories than a treadmill, but it's proven that people run farther when they're outdoors. And less bored!
BUT YES! I also have a treadmill and consider it my alternative when I cannot go outside.
On the days I just can't muster up energy to take a long run, I will hit the elliptical. I think this is a great alternative for those who need something more low-impact. THis will wear out those legs a lot faster than a bike, and also works more of the upper body.
Just my $0.02!!
