Hi, I'm wondering in my muscles should be aching or burning during or after my work out at all? My current regime is this: 7 minutes walking at 3.0 mph. 7 minutes at 3.5 mph. 6 minutes at 4.0 mph. 40 to 60 minutes at 4.5/4.7 mph. Then a walking cool down at 3.5 decreasing speed every couple of minutes. I stretch before and after my work out. So, should I be feeling a little burn? Am I not working hard enough? Or do people generally not feel burning unless their doing weight-orientated training rather than cardio? Thanks a bunch.

"The burn" is caused by lactic acid build up which occurs during anaerobic work, where your body uses the Lactic Acid energy system to resynthesise ATP.

OK. Might be too much detail. Basically, if you want to burn fat than you don't need to feel the burn as fat is only directly burnt when you train aerobically. The burn is caused by training anaerobically which only uses carbs (as glycogen) to fuel your body and will only provide enough energy fpr 60-90 seconds of maximal intensity work.

In other words, no, you will not feel the burn after just doing cardio.

try including some short intervals of sprint running in your exercises that will definitely give you the burn.

Yes, Shinobi_07, it is a different kind of burn. That "burn" is just called a pain.

Hey, can I ask a follow-up question? Is 700 calories burned daily enough to lose weight pretty quickly? I know you need to burn more calories than you consume, but I'm doing the Atkins diet so I'm not quite sure how to figure out if I'm burning enough calories in my workout routine. Any opinions, should I be aiming higher or lower? Thank you.

Which diet you follow makes abosolutely no difference as far as mechanics of losing weight. You need to be in caloric deficit (eat less than you need to maintain your current weigh)t to lose any weight. To lose a pound per week you will need to eat 500 calories less each day than what your body requires for maintaining its weight. You can accomplish this in many ways, with fad diets or just sensible, good nutrition.

Okay, thanks for answering all my questions. I just thought of 2 others. Sorry...

1. I know you need to lose overall body fat to even try to achieve a washboard stomach. But does that mean doing sit-ups while you're still thick is completely futile? Or will I be building muscle, which will increase my metabolism?

2. I'm exercising once in the morning right after I wake up, and once before I go to bed at night. Does taking a nap in the middle of the day have any adverse effects on my weight-loss? For some reason, I just usually end up taking a 3 hour nap between like 3 and 7 like an hour after I eat breakfast/lunch. I'd probably be sitting on my ass watching TV or something if I wasn't sleeping anyway. But are naps bad?

Exercising your abs (or any other part of your body) is never futile. You will be making your muscles stronger and firmer so that when you lose the fat cover you will have something nice underneath it to show off. Taking a nap has no effect on your weight loss/muscle gain. It just your body telling you to take a breather. Many countries have this after lunch "breather" as part of their culture. In Spanish speaking countries it is called a siesta. It goes by different names in different places but the idea is the same and these cultures (not ours) recognize that human body needs to relax and slow down a bit in the middle of the day. Enjoy it.

'ilovemaryjane'.....im assuming mary jane isnt a person. you may want to lay off as the munchies are usually for high calorie-not-good-for-you foods.

just a thought.

of course, if it is a person, i apologize

Thank you so much, Rita. I really appreciate you answering all of my questions! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

No, Mary Jane is not a person. And as a matter of fact, I quit pot just because the munchies kept putting my diet in jeapordy. Not only that, but who wants to workout when they are burnt out from getting stoned? Pot will never go away, just as junk food won't, so I can survive a couple months without either. But thanks for the suggestion. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif
