Hi Everyone,
Thanks for reading this post. My sister just recently (8 days ago) had her upper/lower eye surgery to remove bags (Bleph?). She had her follow up app. yesterday to have stitches removed and she called me today and was sort of "flipping out". She seems to think that her eyelids look like they are drooping and says she feels like they don't move as much as they should. She is really freaking out. I had her email me a picture of herself (she's 3 hours away from me), and WOW....the bags are completely gone and I think it looks great. Her lids are a bit lower than usual, but it seems to me that it may be due to swelling. She still has half moon shaped, yellowish brusing under her eyes, as well as above the lids. She has been crying constantly because she is afraid she'll never look "normal" again. Can anyone give me any insight into this procedure so I can try to advise her better? How long does it take for the swelling to completely subside? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Please assure your sister that it truly takes several months to a year to see the final results of any plastic surgery! I had an upper and lower bleph on May 3rd of last year and it took at least 2-3 months to look "almost" normal with regards to swelling and 7 months until I felt everything really fell into place. Even now, at 1 year I see some small improvements. (I am pleased with my results, but wasn't at all even at 3-4 months)! It is a slow process, and I'm surprised that her p/s did not warn her, though they do tend to say "in a couple of weeks/months" you will be fine! Of course she will continue to improve and by 3-4 weeks she will easily be able to cover any remaining bruising nicely with makeup and should look much better. It can even be longer (or shorter) for some ... everyone heals at their own pace. 8 days is really way too early for her to panic! Patience is needed. Tell her not to worry. Having faith in her choice of p/s should help.

ELLnyc,
Thank you so much for the information. I copied your response (did not include screen name or any other info, just text) and sent it to my sister. I also advised her to check out this site and post her own questions and concerns so that she can find the support that she needs. I hope she does, because I find that responses such as yours are very helpful and supportive. Thanks again. :)

Thanks for the info. And, thanks to my sister for posting. I am feeling a bit better. It has been 10 days. My swelling is down and most of the bruising, except for the dark purple ones under my eyes, can be covered. I feel like I look plastic - like one of my daugher's Bratz dolls or something. My eyelids don't seem to open all the way - like they can't retract into my eye sockets properly. Plus, the bottom lids seem to droop a little still. The overall effect makes me look like I am half asleep, or had to much to drink. Plus, it seems to me like the doctor shaped them wierdly, with the upper lids too high in the corners towards my nose. I am wondering if, how and when all these will resolve. I am feeling really self conscious. I did not tell anyone at work I was doing this, and I am totally paranoid that everyone notices that I look weird.

In regards to the comment about trusting the p/s, I did choose one of the top docs in the city at the top firm. He performed this procedure on two of our friends who are both very pleased and look great. I actually feel badly for the poor guy, because I have been so psycho about it all. I asked him if he knew going into this business that he would be part shrink! He laughed and perscribed me some meds to calm me down. I guess he's used to it.

I don't really feel that I was properly informed of the recovery process by him or his staff. Like you said, I was told after repeadly asking the nurses what to expect, that I would be fine in a couple weeks. I guess "fine" means reasonably able to cover with make-up?? I blame myself for not doing a better job of researching. My lower lids (bags) have bothered me for years and I would have done anything to get rid of them. The uppers were puffy and probably had too much skin, but I would not have gone through with this had I known what it entailed. I would appreciate sharing experiences with anyone else here who has undergone this procedure.

Thanks!
