I'm a 16 year old male. I've been lifting weights for over a year now. I realize that's young to start out, but I have been carefull. I started with the light stuff and made sure not to over do it. Now I've gained lots of definiton and can bench 125. I'm thin and only way 135-140. I lift mon. wed. fri. and take the weekand off. I haven't been geting the muscle mass and bulkiness that's suposed to come. Am I too young? Should I keep going and wait till I grow and develop more? Or is it that I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I need to lift more, or maybe I should back off and let my body do it's own thing. I also work on eating good food and protein. Can anyone help?

If you want to gain bulk you simply have to eat more.

Hi,
Its great the gains you have already made even though you are 16. I think that you need to be patient as the male hormone testosterone helps in muscle development and you still have a few years of "development" to go through. Also I wouldn't recommend that you just eat more. Just try and be patient and allow your body to mature and just keep training!!

Eat 6 times a day, every 3 hours, lots of protien, lots of good fats, cut out simple carbs. My brother-in-law is about the same age and it took him some time to adjust to the amount of food he had to eat before he started to get bigger. At that age it is hard to put on weight if you are naturally skinny... your metabolism is fighting you... but it is not impossible.

Thanks guys. I will eat more and keep lifting at the same time. If I get huge I'll let you know.

Bud, hey man. You do need to eat more. Try what I have done for the past year and a half. High protien/High calorie and eat 6 times a day. Eating basically becomes work in itself. I workout on a Bowflex power pro, and do the body building routine with minor alterations. I drink Muscle tech brand Nitro Tech for help in my protien amounts per day, and Muscle Tech Cell Tech brand creatine. I have gone from 5'11 145lbs to a current 192lbs and gaining. You are young still yet, but don't give up! That's the best advice I can give anyone. I am 21 yrs old now, so I started when I just turned 20. So I probably started at a ideal time. Anyway, take my advice, you sound like a hardgainer like me!! Don't give up, you gotta make up for your fast metabolism, and thats by eating more!

Hey little bro, don't get discouraged! Workout HARD twice a week and cut out all junk food, eat 4 to 6 times a day (supplement between regular meals). Also make sure you are taking a multi-vitamin and getting minerals in your diet. Have you heard of squats? If you don't know what they are, ask someone in your school to show you how to do them properly. Then incorporate them into your workout; you'll gain size and strength fast - get up to doing BW squats or more for reps! Great overall body exercise. Good Luck!
